Yeah, he’s cool. Kinda pricey but definitely don’t mind paying a premium to shop local and be able to flip stacks.

He isn’t pricey...he is at MSRP for new—which is how a brick and mortar store stays open.

His used is inspected and in top condition—worth an extra dollar every time.

Driving back from Houston today—may stop in to see him.

Tell him I’m pissed I didn’t have anything new to listen to last night!

Which ends up probably being better for me since part of my lent deal is that I gave up alcohol.... yup all of it.
Got the shakes as we speak.

Marco (or anyone) -

I'm looking at getting first turntable set up and have googled good ones for beginners without breaking the bank. What are your thoughts on this AT-LP60 / Audioengine A2+ setup (LINK I've also seen the LP120, but I don't know if that upgrade matters for someone brand new to vinyl and I like the automatic arm return that the 60 apparently has. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, looking at getting a few albums to grow the collection, but the reviews on amazon are very hit or miss regarding certain remasters or pressings. Any specific remasters of the following that I should look at (or avoid) while starting:

Eat a Peach
American Beauty
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
LZ 4
Graceland
Music from Big Pink

I've got several Beatles and Dylan records that were my dad's originals, so depending on condition could likely be replacing some of those as well.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

I don't really have a set amount I'm trying to keep it under, more like I just don't want to overspend if unnecessary if that makes sense. The set I posted would be around $325 on amazon. I'd spend $500, but am I going to notice a difference in quality at that point or am I just better off buying the one at $325?

There is a restored "1958-63 RCA VICTOR STEREO ORTHOPHONIC" on eBay for like $1600 bucks that looks pretty badass, but at least at this point would only be buying for said looks. And I assume there is a lot of potential for that go to south/become a money pit.

The other thing is, I'm in a house right now where the space I can allot for the setup is not huge, and plan on moving in 1-2 years and having more room for a cabinet type deal. So, not completely opposed to the idea of starting small and upgrading then.

The table in that link is junk. As I always state, MINIMUM for buying a ‘table is a Pro-Ject Debut or a U-Turn table. They have some weight and a decent cartridge.

Anything less is a novelty, and will end up sounding worse than an MP3 streamed.

Also...stop reading Amazon reviews—the general population is dumb.

Most have no reference point in which to judge a records’ sound by. How do you know the record they are saying is crap isn’t being played back on a $100 Crosley ‘table? What other gear are they using? How is it set up?...you need to know the controls.

Chances are, if they are buying and posting on Amazon, they probably don’t have a good reference point. The folks that do will be commenting on other sites.

If you want to learn more, there are numerous audio forums populated with folks who know what they are speaking of (well, for the most part anyways). Most of these folks have their system gear listed, not as a brag, but as to let others know what their reference is.

Try:

AudioGon
AudioAsylum
ComputerAudiophile
AudioAfficianado
VinylEngine
AnalogPlanet

There are a few more that I can’t recall right now, but these should give you an idea of what others that are more versed in analog reproduction think of recording qualities.

I can confirm this. My first TT ever was the silver version of that exact AT. It really is a waste.

There's no way to adjust the tracking force, and while i never measured it, i imagine it tracks heavy and you might end up doing harm to your records.

As for reissue labels I look for first are usually MOFI, Analogue Productions, Speakers Corner, ORG Music, Wax Cathedral, Impex, Classic Records...those are the ones that i can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure Marco can add some more.

The pressing plants that i get the best results from: RTI, QRP, Pallas and sometimes Optimal. All of the labels I listed above use one of the above pressing plants. I'm sure there are some newer plants too that are putting out great records.

Musicdirect & acousticsounds are two good sites to browse. If an "audiophile" quality pressing is available they usually have it. I also buy a lot from Discogs. You can type in an album, and filter your search results and search labels/years/etc. that way. It takes a bit to get used to, but for the most part I've had really good experiences purchasing from sellers on there.

Now, all of that isn't to say you can't find really solid reissues from the actual music labels themselves. A lot of the time they'll press reissues at one of the above mentioned plants, but a lot of the time they won't and that's when i run into quality control issues on releases...and have to send records back.

Im probably looking to move my VPI Nomad and would rather get rid of it locally”ish”. Not sure if that would fit in your price range though. Marco would probably have to comment on what it would go for. Was gonna ask him anyways...

I’m trying to stimulate a move....

That being said, I finally got the email... the SRV Ultra Disc recording will be in tomorrow!

Sounds like I've got a lot of homework to do on both the hardware and the media side. Thanks for all the info guys, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

Does anyone know how to check and replace a capacitor on an old integrated amplifier? It's a Scott 480C from about 1978.

Is this something I could do myself?

Any help is appreciated.

Also, I'm looking to pick up a new semi affordable turntable. I've read good things about the Pro-Ject Essential III. Any good? Any measurable difference between that one and the Debut?

Been eyeing this baby up for a year or so, finally pulled the trigger.
Clearaudio Concept table, Satisfy carbon fiber tone arm, Clearaudio MC cart.
Thanks Marco for the set-up, you’re the best!
