Been listening to the canon of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, etc...

I’m aware of America’s relatively young age.. but are there any great American composers of that style of music from yesteryear?

If so, who? I’d like to check out their work.

TIA.

Copeland, Bernstein, Elfman, Williams - for actual music

Cage, Glass, probably some others who I’m not thinking of - for avant-garde, experimental stuff

I can’t think of any well-known American composers from before the twentieth century.

Aaron Copland
Leonard Bernstein
Samuel Barber
Charles Ives
Howard Hanson
David Diamond
I am a fan of Christopher Rouse who died within the last month
Michael Torke
George Crumb (if you like modern)
Henry Cowell (again modern and can get past his past)
George Gershwin
Joseph Schwantner
John Corigliano
Michael Torke
Johnny T. Williams

Really there are dozens but it kind of depends on what you are looking for. There aren't a lot of composers from the Baroque and Classical periods. American composers really started taking off in the late Romantic period into the 20th Century. But Scott Joplin is very different than George Crumb. And neither sound like The European composers of the previous centuries.

If you prefer more tonal music, try Alan Hovhaness Sym 2, Hanson Sym 2, Copland, Barber

Someone seems to really like Michael Torke. May have to alert the authorities, creep.

Should definitely check out Samuel Barber. Copland is the quintessential American composer, but more pops/Americana than Barber.

John Williams as well. Some of the best "modern classical" music is in film, and he's been prolific to put it lightly.

Your title says “Musicians”, but you seem to mean composers.

As far as primarily musicians go, have you ever heard Wynton Marsalis play classical music on his trumpet ?

There are few better.
