At the "When Hell Freezes Over" reunion concert in the Superdome (1995-ish?) Henley started to give a lecture about the Walden Woods Foundation. Fans listened politely for about 15 or 20, maybe even 30 seconds. Then the booing started. Henley kept going and the booing got louder. Soon, it seemed like 75,000 people were all booing, you couldn't hear a word he was saying and he shut up. They started the next song and everyone cheered. All was forgiven.
I remember that clearly. Nobody wanted to hear that crap. All in all it was a terrific show. Melissa Ethridge even rocked it out to open the show.

That is a very high level of talent. Most groups have one, maybe two band members that can sing, the Eagles had everybody, not to mention most of them were multi-instrumentalists as well.
They're not all that unique in that regard.
Fleetwood Mac had Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and Lindsey Buckingham. Very good but nobody would suggest GOAT.
John, Paul, George, and Ringo all sang lead vocals and had solo hits.
Bonham was the only member of Zeppelin who didn't sing.

All the members of Buffalo Springfield sang. In fact their least-used singer, drummer Dewey Martin, probably had the best voice of all.
At least 4 of the 5 members of Moby Grape sang (I can't recall if the drummer did)
And those pesky Byrds who keep coming up, 4 of the original 5 sang

I bought tickets for my sisters, who are both big Eagles/Don Henley fans, as a gift. Christmas? Birthdays? I don't remember.
The floor seats up close were $85, which was a lot back then. I figured if I was paying $85 for good seats for them, I wasn't sitting in the Terrace with my friends who were going for ~$45, so I got a floor seat for me too.
The Saturday morning tickets went on sale, a couple of us went to a friend's office that had a call center. We were dialing our asses off at 8:00am (or whatever timevtickets went on sale). We got through pretty quick and I ended up with 3 seats in Row R (18th row) almost dead center stage. Great seats and we had a great time.
I remember the sound being bad for Melissa Ethridge. I was annoyed because I liked her music, but really annoyed about the prospect of the Eagles sounding like shite, especially after paying $255 plus bullshite charges. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

If I had to guess, I think the Beatles would be recognized universally as the best of all time

Eh, Don Henley could surely sing.

they are easily the most over-rated band ever,
You are apparently unfamiliar with The Beatles.

The Eagles and Tom Petty have a lot in common.

And as far as the Beatles sounding "dated", most bands are a product of their times.
But not all of them sound dated like the Beatles.

I hate the fricking Eagles.
Seriously, not even in my top 20. Props for their success, but most of their catalog is boring to me.
Zeppelin, Sabbath, Beatles all far ahead.

Their HFO concert in NOLA was great.
Probably not the best of all time though.

Maybe the Hotel California lineup.
Henley (for singing/songwriting, not drumming)
Frey (great utility player, lead singer/backup singer and composer)
Meisner (underrated on bass, fantastic singer in either lead or harmony role)
Felder/Walsh - best 1/2 punch on guitar, maybe ever (yes, I know about Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard.)
But, while I'm a big fan of Bernie - and he was a very versatile picker, Walsh elevated the band's rock credentials. While Schmidt is a great high voice singer in his own right, his style is just cleaner/more sterile than the raspy (country?) edge Meisner had.
