Or he could not have charged it last night.

Press and hold button on top and push the home button. Goes CLICK.
And yeah, that band needs to quit their bitching. They must be really bad.

Pay to play options are never a good situation for the band the bar is just capitalizing on their stupidity. What a bunch of morons.

I was in a band. We didn't always get payed, but we NEVER paid to play. Dummies.

Why even play the venue if you're going to complain about the show before you play?

That's the sign that you have a really crappy band when you have to pay to play somewhere. I guarantee you Candlebox doesn't have to pay to play at the varsity because the varsity makes enough with them there already.

I love the 40+ guys that play at the Dew Drop Inn on Friday & Saturday nights and describe themselves as "musicians". No, dude, you're an insurance salesman that plays bass guitar at the Dew Drop Inn for beer money. Capitol Records ain't gonna sign you to a deal, hate to break it to ya.

Two days of hard work making music?
If you consider making music "hard work", you need to find something else to do for a living. A) its not really work, and B) No musicians that ever made money in the business considered it to be work - its something they love to do.
also, if you're unsure about the possibility of enough of a turnout, why in the blue hell would you book the varsity? shouldnt you stick to house parties and such?

Even if you're a fricking awesome band you should never pay to play. It's absurd.
But yeah, this is a metal band that is completely clueless. Just play clicks and have your show there. Don't waste the varsitys time.

Well candlebox is getting a guarantee from the venue, so it's completely opposite

Unless things have changed at the Varsity, I recall that you had an option of paying $500 up front and getting a higher percentage of the door, or taking a smaller percentage of the door and not paying anything. The $500 is supposed to cover the advertising, and if you don't pay it, you get no advertising from the varsity. That's what we were told back then.
That post pretty much sums up what is wrong with bands/the music scene these days. There have always been bands that make excuses for why they suck and nobody comes to their shows ("cover bands ruin the scene!!"), but it seems most bands are whiny these days. The last 2 bands I did that were somewhat successful, we put in 6-7 days a week practicing or going out and putting up flyers/handing out handbills. I guess some people think it's crazy that you might actually have to put work into something for it to be successful.
Oh, and Doc, how about the new trend of bands begging people to give them money so they can record an album? What ever happened to using what you had access to (4-tracks, radio with a record button, etc.) to make demos?
