Working on a song, and I don't know enough about my subject. It's going to be a humorous type thing, but I would like to at least be based on some facts. I think I have a good idea that can turn into something.

It’s a big, shallow, brackish lake over which runs the world’s longest bridge. What else do you need to know?

I would like to know a lot. Are there areas that are like beaches? What type of fish are there? What methods of fishing are used? Trotlines? Nets? boxes? are there crabs?
I was there during the storm this weekend, and I got an idea. Heck, it would be great to work on it with somebody that really knows the lake, and doesn't mind writing something goofy.

I made a living diving all along The Tennessee River and all of those lakes, I know those pretty well, and can spot a song by a guy who doesn't know much about it. And I realize what I don't know. Would like to keep it kind of real, even though it's supposed to be a funny song.

Ponchartrain Beach was an old amusement park in New Orleans along the lakeshore. It had a ride called the Zephyr.

There are some beachy areas on the northshore in Mandeville and around Fountainbleu State Park.

The water is so muddy that you cannot see your hand an inch from your face.

Yes, I know that's probably the case. I know it's shallow, and any wind is going to keep it muddied up. That's OK, my song idea isn't about diving.
Are there many gators in the lake?

Gators live near the shore on the freshwater side, but they don’t venture out far.

I guess that would be the NW corner(not looking at a map right now)? are there any beaches up in that area( you already said there are beaches near Mandeville)? I know there are a lot of old structures in the water and old pilings and stumps.

Can you gig frogs around the banks in little sloughs and inlets?

An airplane crashed into it in the ‘60’s

and at least 2 dumbasses a year drive off the Causeway bridge into the lake.

It has its own police department that tries every opportunity to stretch its reach

The po-po don’t care about 70 in a 65

Many folks will throw crab traps off the sea wall and hope for a good catch...during summer there are hundreds of people doing this.

Look up Lake Pontchartrain and shell dredging...it was a huge issue in the ‘80’s.

The “Point” was a place near the lighthouse, marina, and yacht club where the Metry hey-bras, rolludes, and pits would hang out in the late ‘80’s...they would turn up Zeppelin and Foghat on the Alpine, get drunk, then eventually a fight would break out.

There were restaurants at lakeshore park...Augie’s Delago (burned in a spectacular fire), Sid-Mar’s (fell into lake in Katrina), Brunning’s, and Fitzgerald’s...all were seafood joints.

There is now a beach volleyball court with a bar and something else just as you enter the park (Breakwater drive)

A boathouse/condo on Breakwater Dr. on the lakefront was assured to take on 5’ of water when even the slightest storm surge came in.

Benson kept his massive yacht at the Yacht club.

That’s all I got for now..may have more in a bit.

Suggested titles:

"Ponchartrain kept a-Rollin'"

"Ponchartrain in Vain"

"You beat me to the Ponch"

I was thinking "Surfin Lake Ponchartrain"

The first surfin song with an accordion in it.

Summer's here and I'm outta jail
Lots of bread within our reach
We can rob some folks at Ponchartrain Beach

It's a bad place to get caught during a sudden summer thunderstorm, particularly if you're in an old 15' bass boat.

You have to throw in a mention of Tchefuncte, Tangipahoa, Bogue Falaya, The Rigolets, Chinchouba, or Bonfouca.

Don't forget the Abita River, and the shipbuilding along the Tchefuncte River. My Dad told me about one of my grandfather's cousins who was killed rafting logs on the Abita. He slipped between two logs and drowned and was only 18.

Absolutely stunning sunrises and sunsets especially in the summer with all the anvil clouds and thunderstorms.

Lots of blue crabs (Ponchartrain Blues). Have never fished it but similar to the Rigolets I assume (specs, reds, flounder, drum).
