I've always been aware of him. He has had a prolific career over 50+ years, but i've never really listened to him. I've heard him, and seen movies he's scored, but he's always sort of been on the periphery of my musical interests. So...I'm looking to change that, and for a good place to start...

Taking all recommendations!

This was my very first CD. Probably a good starting point for him. It's been a while since I've listened to him much but always appreciate when I hear him in a song. I love that he played slide on Willin because Lowell George had hurt his hand. And I love his playing on Zevon's final album. Great slide player.

Probably my favorite Ry Cooder song:

I think it's going to work out fine.

His title song for the movie Paris, Texas borrowed from Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground" and is simplistically haunting. His slide work is amazing.

Buena Vista Social Club is available on (2) 180g LPs LINK...and is well worth the price of admission.

Buena Vista is fantastic. I'd also recommend John Hiatt's Bring the Family. Cooder's work on that is exemplary -- especially on tracks like Lipstick Sunset and Memphis in the Meantime.

You guys are coming through big time! I’m well acquainted with BVSC, as I had a roommate that played that album al the time. However, I had no idea cooder had something to do with it. Good stuff.

Oh man, that James Carr song is one of my all time favorites. I was just listening to that record a few weeks ago. Love the cooder instrumental take on it!

Didn't RC do all the slide work on Crossroads (the Ralph Macchio movie)?

also, the album done by the same band, under the name "little village"...good stuff. for those who dont know, that band is ry cooder, john hiatt, nick lowe & jim keltner

another ry cooder solo album i very much like is "get rhythm", his band includes van dyke parks, flaco jiminez and jim keltner on that one

Yep. And though the Karate Kid wasn't the world's best actor, I did like this movie. Guitar duel with Steve Vai at the end was classic. Macchio was coached pretty well on his fingering.

Favorite Ry Cooder song from the movie (with Sonny Terry on harp)-- Walkin' Away Blues

I never knew he was on that album. I always thought it was Landreth but you're right, it's Cooder. Memphis in the Meantime is a fantastic song. (Sonny does play on Slow Turning though.)
