Discovered him on Alt Country radio listening to Lucero. Very soulful and unique sound. Has anyone seen him live? My friend has seen him twice and said he'll give you chills live.

Huge fan. Listened to him all morning, in fact, and "In the Throes" has my vote for album of the year.
He's opening for my friends in Tulsa next week and I'm so sad I can't make the trip, I'm dying to see him
"Nobody Gives a Damn About Songs Anymore" is definitely my favorite.

I love "Christmas lights" and "low" I plan on seeing him in Bham come November.
My friend saw him open up for Lucero, I was so jealous.

Yes, and you should too. He's the best.

The best? That is quite the statement. I highly doubt it holds true.

It's good, but it's no Southeastern

In the throes is a great album but imo his previous album, Everything the Hard Way, is his best

When I saw him, this was my feeling.
Everyone else was sitting there silent. It's a lot to take in. His songs are straight from the heart. No bullshite

Southeastern is significantly better than In the Throes IMHO. Better guitar work without question. The sum of the musical arrangements plus the complexity of the themes puts Southeastern way over the top for me. Amanda Shires's violin adds a ton to the feeling/mood of the album. It is lyrically superior in that I find Moreland's lyrics, while deep, somber and as heavy hitting as possible, are very straightforward and leave little to the imagination. Isbell, on the other hand, leaves a tremendous amount to the imagination. Live Oak for example....i swear that song makes an old timey movie take place in my mind. Southeastern is a more polished production, more complex in themes, and all around better work from a purely artistic standpoint. Just my opinion.
Obviously, Southeastern vs In the Throes is an extremely polarizing debate, and everyone has their own take. People, that are for the most part fans of the same stuff, are very strongly on one side or the other and there is no in between on this topic! I love both albums fwiw.

Both great albums, but I think in the throes has more depth and better overall songwriting.
I've seen both live (Jason many times and have played with him) and I can tell you john was head and shoulders better.
