I will agree that Southeaster has better production and is over all a lot more complex. With that said I think that's what hurt the album IMO. Isbell is a great singer / songwriter. No need to dress up the album with extra production and multiple complex sounds. My favorite song is elephant because of how simple it is. Sometimes more is less.
It's really not fair to compare the two albums when you think of Isbell's much larger budget and access to some of the best studios and producers.

Songwriting reminds me a lot of a Chris Knight with a little Hayes Carll thrown in.
Though since he plays just about everything on every song, I'd say he's a more talented musician.

He has a completely different style of storytelling. Doc was right with the Townes comparison I think. He's just not BETTER than Townes

As far as the production is concerned, John recorded the entire record in his parents house. He wasn't in a fancy Nashville studio on some kind of absurd budget. I think the production value is remarkable considering where he put it all together and it adds some authenticity and honesty that perhaps wouldn't have been captured elsewhere..
I'm super hyped about seeing again him with Caleb Caudle in November.
He deserves a solid turnout; hope everybody can bring a few folks.
