Was reminiscing about seeing him when I was a tenderfoot. Was so much fun to see him live. Any AC or Box Tops fans?

He was great live in late '80's. Great.

There's a great story from the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" about Gabby Haynes of the butthole Surfers having an acid freak out in the Netherlands, just generally cursing everyone out and destroying everything. Then a man walks in the room and asks to borrow a guitar. Gabby asks "Who are you?" and the man says, "Alex Chilton."
Gabby immediately sobers up, drops to his knees, opens up every guitar case and tells Alex to take whatever he wants.

i saw alex chilton solo live once, and it was ok. The big star reunion tour was pretty tight.

Agree, it's a really good documentary.
I read that Alex finished his career living in Nola, did anyone get to see him play in Nola when he was living there?

From the time I was a pre-teen I heard about this band called Big Star,who'd released some albums in the early '70s. But they were never played on the radio and I was too poor to buy records, and they were nearly impossible to find anyway.
When I was at LSU in the late '80s I actually had the chance to see Alex Chilton at the Chimes, but I couldn't talk anyone into going with me ("Alex who?"), and being a broke college student who could barely afford the seven dollars, I passed. (Historical note: none of the ads promoting the show mentioned Big Star, who at this point I'd still never heard. Instead they stressed the fact that the Replacements had written a song about him)
Finally, around 2003, I got the chance to hear Big Star -- and I was completely blown away. Definitely one time anticipation didn't lead to disappointment. Big Star is one of the greatest American bands of all time.
A couple of years later I almost went to a Big Star reunion in Austin, but had to cancel at the last minute.
And now it's too late.

Great singer....loved his rendition of "I'm Your Puppet" when he was with the Box Tops. Also, "The Door You Closed To Me". So sorry that he passed while in New Orleans. Sad that he didn't even have health insurance to address an ailing heart.

I got to meet him several times after he moved to NO. Never told me his last name, and I had no clue it was Chilton ( was a huge fan of his). Another friend finally clued me in as to his last name. I never let on that I knew he was famous. Was a really great guy. Was supposed to meet him at a party in the neighborhood the day after he passed. So damn sad.

It was hard to 'Top' Big Star- sorry, couldn't resist the pun. I do have a couple of his EP's from the late 70's.
