You're right. It takes about 10 seconds. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with all this time I've been wasting.

not to mention that CDs can become scratched and they take up space in your car. Also they're aren't free.

Were you still listening to tapes 10 years ago?

You would lose that bet. The majority of my music listening occurs at my house. The car is audiobooks, podcasts, and phone calls. My car is my office so I'm on the phone a lot.

I don't have a problem paying for music I like.

No. Again, I do not have a problem supporting the music I like. The artist worked hard to make it and I pay them for it. It's just like any other transaction I make during the day.

CAD - I pop in the store on my lunch break because it is usually convenient since I'm already out there. It's not like I buy the cd and leave it in my car.

I buy CDs and DVDs all the time. Sorry but I'm just not a fan of just streaming everything all the time. I'm proud of my collection.

The only thing spotify can improve on is their radio function. It repeats a shitload. That is one thing pandora does much much better. Ia ctually discover new music on Pandora but I make my playlists on spotify.

Also the only music I have really paid for is Beatles albums. I just like that itunes has them all in one place and its legal and shite.

I completely agree that the industry missed the Napster window & has never been able to catch up, but the suits aren't doing the suffering.

Artists can still do ok, too - if they move enough t-shirts & keychains. Or have their (or by threat of "f.u., I'll use someone else's song if you don't give me publishing") works used in ads, movies, etc. Where most of the sh#t settles is on the backs of writers & touring musicians.

*and crew, who endure the most & gain the least.

Bands need to start looking at themselves as a business instead of just a band. Forbes did an article on the band Ken Mode, who are not exactly selling out huge arenas and selling millions of albums, but still make a good enough living to not have to work a real job.
quote:

The Matthewson brothers, in contrast, delve deep into the fine print. They spent seven months negotiating their contract with their French record label, Season of Mist. Most bands borrow money from their record label to record their album in exchange for the rights to the music. The band then pays its debt to the record label from the royalties it earns on the album. Because of their business acumen, KEN mode financed the making of their album themselves and maintained ownership of their own music.

Owning your music seems to be the key. LINK

I'm with you on owning physical copies, but screw CDs. Buy vinyl. I never buy CDs any more.

You can set spotify to high quality on wifi at your house and compare it to cd quality.

i have my share of downloads, but i have no shame admitting i still buy CDs. besides, if someone were to break into my house & steal all my stuff today, i want that person to at least break a sweat doing it, as opposed to walking out the door with my entire collection in just one hand

while i do bundle certain music onto my ipod, i'm OK with taking a CD out of its case & popping it into a player....i'm not that strapped for time, lol

If the artist isn't compensated, why should he continue?

This whole "the artist is rich anyway" idea is absolutely ridiculous. I know a number of mid-level artist - like Jason Isbell level - and they don't make shite. Sure Beyonce rakes it in - but that's not because of her music - it's because of her star power.

Yep, and I like listening to albums as a whole. I know it's weird but I like to take in one album at a time. I use my phone for audio books and podcasts. ETA ... I also like having the physical copy or the album and read through the book.

I'm the same way bro, I never got out of the 90s and still enjoy popping in a cd or listening to regular radio.

Album art, especially concept albums, used to have great themes and gave certain bands "eras" to match the music, I miss the early and mid 90's when stuff was more fun.

true, but i'll give them credit for still having great customer service IMO....unlike other growing businesses, they still seem to act like mortals to their consumers. again, just my opinion....
