It’s ok. There are 4 or 5 good songs and the rest are kind of meh.

There’s already a thread on this. Was on first page until recent.

Practically fell asleep 3 songs in. Went back to the new Sleep album also released yesterday. Will give this one another shot, perhaps this afternoon. Mer De Norms and 13th Step were phenomenal, but I'm feeling a let down here.

Is a great album. Morw piano based and melodic but sets up the new Tool nicely imo.

I didn't think I was going to like it but I do

Reporting back.

Well... ummm... it’s an album. Can’t decide if I liked it or not. A few really good ones and A LOT of songs that sound almost exactly the same.

I expected some better choruses from MJK. Album felt pretty mellow compared to their previous. Probably their most Piano-heavy album to date. I’ll give it another listen eventually but idk my opinion right now.

Yeah, gave it another listen earlier today. Nothing memorable really, except hearing Jesus’ name repeatedly. If I wanted to hear Jesus that many times I’d listen to gospel or go to church; I do neither. We get it Maynard.

Decent album.

I could probably Google this, but why does A Perfect Circle release its music on Spotify when Tool does not? Is APC a loss leader for Tool's catalog?

I'm sure it has something to do with a digital music clause in their contract

2 differnet bands, 2 different mangagement styles. MJK is not the decision maker of either. He has input, but Danny and Adam are the leaders of Tool while Billy is for APC. People act like these are the same two bands or put them in competition with each other ("APC better than TOOL bra!!!!") due to having the same singer. It's quite goofy

Agree to disagree. I'm very disappointed in it. If they were going for something different than their previous albums then they succeeded. Not worth the ~15 year wait, imo.

That's probably pretty spot-on. Billy and Maynard may think that they are getting a better deal with Spotify on how much they are paid per stream. It wouldn't surprise me if the members of Tool want a lot more $$$ per stream, because they view it as a very valuable brand, which it is. Spotify or other streaming devices probably can't come to an agreement with them on that.

Tool is all about the money and control, which I don't have a problem with. They are trying to maximize their brand. After their fight with Zoo in the late 90's to gain control of their property and image, they have kept a very tight control over everyting Tool related. I think they want to keep their content distributed by very tight channels so they don't lose out on money or any distribution or pirating issues. I'm sure it's more complex than that as well.

It's very different, and I'd expect the album to be pretty polarizing. A lot of the songs remind me of some of the acoustic sets they did at radio stations while touring for Mer de Noms and 13th step. Most songs sounded a lot different than the original, like The Hollow. I loved the alternate versions...and this release seems like a whole album of songs written in the same manner as those acoustic sets.

Agreed. It reminds me more of eMOTIVe than 13th step and Mer de Noms. I was not a fan of eMOTIVEe at all.

Side note: I discovered awhile back that they have a live album/set where they play each album in order on a different night. Shows were at Red Rocks and the sound quality is pretty good. Better than some other live albums I've heard.

fair enough, but this wasn't a "wait" they really stopped making new music and went on hiatus.

Then maynard started getting impatient with TOOL and asked Billy if he had enough material to make a new album, and they pumped one out in 3 months. Just a "hey, let's do something this year" thing.

It's not like TOOL where people are waiting since 2006 because of legal issues and creativity issues.

Which brings me to this. TOOL is in a lose-lose situation, no way that album lives up to the hype. I'd venture to say it's damn near impossible and fans are going to tear it apart.

Obviously, they were, and they did succeed.

I'd venture to say this could be MJK' best work vocally, esp singing wise. One thing you can say about MJK is that he hasn't lost a step in the vocals, some of these songs are just beautifully sung.

Would rather hear Billy do another aSHES divide. I loved that he did it by himself.

I love Billy’s guitar work and music writing, but just couldn’t get into Ashes Divide.
