Really surprised me Friday when isbell was saying Lori mckenna was the first woman to ever take home the ACM songwriter of the year award... 2017 seems really late for that to happen

Well, he isnt an outsider because he is with a major label in Atlantic, although its not a huge country label. He does record all his music in Nashville.
It really boils down to the fact that country radio doesnt care to play him because it doesnt benefit them since he is with Atlantic, and they arent pumping money into radio stations, award voters, and other various Nashville outlets to get him exposure.
Chris Stapleton somehow hit the jackpot, because he is signed to an actual Nashville label in Mercury. They decided to back him and pay the money it takes to break an artist, and that money won him all the CMA awards in 2015, and the rest is history.
Stapleton didnt get big because he is good. He got big because of money. Just like Sturgill isnt getting big because people dont like him. Its because he isnt being backed in the Nashville market.

There are some great female songwriters,but not very many in the country business. Even now, I think it is a participation trophy.
