So we have

Georgia - Allman Brothers/REM

California - Metallica/Eagles/Grateful Dead

New York - KISS/Blue Oyster Cult/Ramones

Texas - SRV/ZZ Top/Pantera

Am I missing any?

Yeah, but they're Styx. Smashing Pumpkins is every bit as popular and considerably better.

So of those states that I listed earlier, who is the biggest from each state?

California: Beach Boys

Arkansas: Carl Perkins

Massachusetts: Aerosmith

Georgia: Little Richard

Forgot Cheap Trick, but I don't think I'm the only one.

Aerosmith is THE band from Massachusetts. Don't think anyone comes close.

Louisiana is tough. I forgot about Jerry Lee Lewis. I was stuck on Kenny Wayne Shepherd or Down.

California is tough to choose from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Beach Boys, Metallica, Eagles, Sly and the Family Stone, Journey, Guns n' Roses, Santana and the Doors just off the top of my head.

Two totally different eras so not really a true statement. Not saying it is false.

50 states plus DC. I tried to mix quality, popularity, and also how much they are tied to the state. Bands that are more deeply tied to their state had the edge (So, yeah, Hendrix is from Seattle, but he was in a band with two Brits that recorded in London… he had virtually no connection to Seattle once he high tailed at it out of there)

And some states the challenge was finding a single band.

Alabama: Drive-by Truckers
Alaska: Portugal. The Man.
Arizona: Meat Puppets
Arkansas: Evanescence
California: The Eagles
Colorado: Neutral Milk Hotel (three states can claim them, but they relocated and recorded in CO)
Connecticut: Dashboard Confessional
Delaware: George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers
Florida: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Georgia: REM
Hawaii: Bruno Mars
Idaho: Built to Spill
Illinois: Cheap Trick
Indiana: John Mellencamp
Iowa: Everly Brothers
Kansas: Kansas
Kentucky: My Morning Jacket
Louisiana: The Meters
Maine: Doc Hopper
Maryland: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Massachusetts: Pixies
Michigan: Iggy and the Stooges
Minnesota: The Replacements (assuming Prince doesn’t qualify)
Mississippi: Blind Melon
Missouri: Chuck Berry
Montana: Steve Albini
Nebraska: Cursive
Nevada: The Killers
New Hampshire: Aerosmith
New Jersey: BRUUUUUUUUUCE!
New Mexico: The Shins
New York: The Ramones
North Carolina: Superchunk (if left to me, Archers of Loaf)
North Dakota: Tigirlily
Ohio: Black Keys
Oklahoma: Flaming Lips
Oregon: Everclear (they might want Blitzen Trapper)
Pennsylvania: Dead Milkmen (though Modern Baseball is making a case right now)
Rhode Island: Talking Heads
South Carolina: Hootie and the Blowfish
South Dakota: The Trashmen
Tennessee: Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three
Texas: Buddy Holly and the Crickets
Utah: The Used
Vermont: Phish
Virginia: DMB
Washington: Nirvana
Washington, DC: Fugazi
West Virginia: Zao
Wisconsin: Violent Femmes
Wyoming: Teenage Bottlerocket

Michigan is tough. Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Ted Nugent, Bill Haley...

And then there's Motown, but very few of those folks were from Michigan.

ETA: Forgot Seger.

Texas gets Pantera
Alabama gets the Alabama Shakes
Louisiana is tough as most of our best are jazz or funk artists. Maybe Zebra? Better than Ezra? Anders?

Hey, I'm not happy about it either, but Arkansas had slim pickins. Here's the music from Arkansas wiki: LINK

Leon Helm is from there, but the Band isn't. I, personally, love the Gossip, but I doubt many have heard of them.

The Louisiana artists I can think of are Better Than Ezra, Zebra, 12 Stones, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Down, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Acid Bath and just about every other Anselmo project.

Out of those who should get the nod?
