Can't we come together and realize that Phish and Passion Pit BOTH suck?
Anyway, I do agree with the article that bands that can't make a decent studio album are deeply flawed. I've seen the Dead, I've seen Phish. The reason people enjoy their live shows has little to do with the music. It's the party atmosphere (you thought I was gonna say drugs, didn't you?). It's the feeling of belonging to a tribe. I get that. It's not my tribe, but I understand why people love them.
But the fact they can't write and record a decent album does speak volumes. To be fair, I think most bands today suffer from the opposite problem: they record an album before they have any live chops. It's almost too easy to form and record a band before you have played much live. And that's how you get good.
I do agree that music was meant to be heard live. I'm a huge fan of live music. But that's no excuse for lousy songwriting. A great live band will eventually be able to capture that sound on an album, if they are a great band.
ETA: Also, to be fair to the author of the article, he ripped on his own favorite band, too. Just in a different section. One that I related to.

I don't like phish but Grateful Dead is one of my favorite bands and I've never seen them live. I listen to tier live shows because they were kings of improvisation.
They also had some very good songs.

I didn't really like the grateful dead until I smoked weed, but I really didnt listen to a lot of music before I smoked.

Same for me but I was sober driving the first time I really listened to them so it's not like I had some kind of musical transformation when I started smoking
