The greatest director, taking the greatest playwright and wordsmith, and adding one of the greatest actors. It just worked.

I think what really made it work was having the actors to do it in a style reminiscent of the Noh play.

Macbeth is the perfect Shakespeare play for the Noh style.

Haha no. Meant as a statement of how much I love that film. I just don't see the possibility of anything being as perfect.

I mean you did call for snobs?

I figured, I just read it in this weird "come at me bro" kinda way.

You are correct about Throne of Blood being brilliant though. I will now think about it constantly until I watch it again.

I sort of did

Throne of Blood is better than any film you can think of.

My job is done.

We should split these into genres. I could list a ton of great horror:

Suspiria
Zombi
The Ring
A Tale of Two Sisters
The Grudge
Audition
Hammer horror films
Vampyre
Dead Snow
Cronos
The Orphanage

Has to be one of the Zhang Yimou films. He is an alltime great no doubt.

Ill go with Raise the Red Lantern

eta: La Dolce Vita honorable mention. fwiw, I am very ignorant about Kurosawa. Need to see Throne of Blood and others.

So many great horror films. I'm a huge Fulci and Argento fan as well as some Bava.

Suspiria is at the top of the list in that category for me.

Good call on this as well.

I'd add Metropolis and Nosferatu if they don't count as "silent."

1.Brotherhood of the Wolf (Should be on every list)
2.Oldboy
3.Pan's Labyrinth

good list. i would put Das Boot on there in place of timecrimes and either Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle in place of Nightwatch
