just cracks me up how familiar so many of the characters in that show are to me
A lot of it is stuff that legitimately has been done in the church.
The God Squad was hilarious. I still remember the “Power Team” ripping phone books the preaching when I was younger.

Kelvin is the one that cracks me up so hard, as far as being like real life, because he could completely be a post from the Preachers and Sneakers instagram.
The whole Hill Church milieu is 100% Kelvin, but he also reminds me of all the Christain "hipsters" from 10 years ago. So dead on.
In all honesty. Tim Tebow actually looks the part in his interviews from Swamp Kings. He could be Kelvin.

There are places for sophomoric humor and the Gemstones are certainly one of those places.

No
I grew up in it for real and enjoy being able to laugh.

Would The Righteous Gemstones been a better drama?
Gemstones is easily a parody. This is like asking if we could have a drama based on family corporate succession -- we have shows like that.
Danny McBride and company made this such a wonderful and funny show. If you think it's all college humor, then you probably dislike South Park, etc. It's much more intelligent than that.

I kept wondering what if it was done in the same style as Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.
Why don’t you just shave your pu**y and move to Malibu then.

I've said this before on here as a PK (preacher's kid) this show rings so incredibly true and even though it makes fun of the business of religion and mega-churches it also has a lot of heart and at some point there is a sincere and honest commitment to trying to live up to the principle
I get the exact same feeling. They make fun of megachurch culture but do not appear to be mocking Christianity as a religion or its values/principles which is a bit surprising for the industry who typically detests Christianity.
Anyone who grew up in church knows better than anyone how hypocritical and vain church people can be
Secularists or anti-religion types actually believe people don't notice it.
