What you're really looking for is Richard Donner's Superman...the first superhero film ever. That Superman was about as different from the original character as you could get. The original character was a strong-handed enforcer(who couldn't fly btw) who policed the underbelly of society- using his great strength to beat up bullies who beat their wives, going after corporate bad guys out to bilk and hurt society.
Richard Donner's Superman was a fantastic film, but also a different character entirely than was originally envisioned. Most people's idea of Superman has more to do with Superfriends than Jerry Seigel and Joe Schuster. Boy Scout Superman is a construct and boring. In Man of Steel, Superman wasn't uncaring, he was unprepared. The only training he had came from Earth Parents who were afraid for his safety and his life. Man of Steel was a good film, it just wasn't SuperScout.

Who said they specifically wanted Superman from Action Comics #1? Or that that was the only Superman? I do like Donner's version. All-Star. A couple of Johns' runs are good. Byrne's Man of Steel. Busiek. Lots of good stuff out there.

For those of you that are partial to Donner's Superman, Patty Jenkins hasn't been shy about sharing that the Reeve's movie is her touchstone for this Wonder Woman film. It's why we have her tribute to the Clark catching a bullet to save Lois scene in the Wonder Woman trailers.
After seeing film after film that were influenced by Dark Knight Returns and Death of Superman, her love for Superman the Movie is a big ray of hope.

And Superman is far from wooden. He's the moral glue for DC. Like Cap is for Marvel (or was).
I'm glad you mentioned Cap. That's the basis for my whole point about the criticism on here for Snyder's interpretation of Superman. The histrionics about everything from the color of the uniform to the damage during the Zod fight were beyond ridiculous. Nevermind that not once during MoS or BvS does he compromise his core values.
Meanwhile, this board eats up CA:TWS. Not only is TWS himself a terrible and underwhelming villian but he completely ruins the Captain America character. CA is the moral linchpin of the Marvelverse planted in the bedrock values of Duty, Honor, Country. Nothing is going to push him off that moral stance. Nothing.
But in TWS and CA:CW we just accept the fact that Cap, because he went to PS127 in Brooklyn with Bucky in 1935, is going to toss his life's purpose away for a personal relationship? Really? Completely undercuts the entire character of Cap. If you can't see that you're just being obtuse.

It's astonishing, really. Of course, this was the problem with handing the keys to Snyder and not having a guy like Bruce Timm overseeing the entire build from the beginning, ensuring that the characters as they are loved are what ends up on screen in some fashion.
Maybe some exec somewhere up the food chain got pissed about JK Rowling having as much control over Harry Potter as she did? Otherwise it makes no sense that they neglected to have a person close to the source material in place to oversee the entire thing in that manner.

I just read the actual screening for real critics is May 25th and the embargo doesn't lift till may 31st, which is the day before the movie is released. Not alot of confidence there.

Cap is who is because of Bucky.
They're brothers. TWS he went back for Bucky because that was after the mission. Cap had already beat Hydra's plan when he really started the "I know you're in there fight."
CW, Cap knew Bucky was in there from being pulled out the river. He also didn't want to see him put through a kangaroo court and/or fall into enemy hands again.
He immediately falls into enemy hands. Again.
He's the human side of moral fiber. Time was against Bucky and the Avengers. Do what's right now.
Tony is the logical side of morality. The machine of bureaucracy, fight and win from within. Do what's wrong now to make it right later.

You know who also loved Richard Donner superman? Bryan Singer, that man made Superman Return. Also I don't know if you guys know this but it's is now canon that Captain America have been a Hydra agent all along.

The premiere is May 25, not the screening for critics. However you are correct that the embargo doesn't lift until the 31st - two days before the film releases nationwide. So yeah...that's usually not a good thing. They did the same thing for Suicide Squad and Batman v. Superman.
Color me hopeful but skeptical.

Superman Return
This was way better than MoS. It suffers from not having a big fight at the end. Routh and Spacey were both way better than Cavill and Eisenberg.

Routh and Spacey did a great job, the movie suffered from its script and premise.
It also raises the question of James Marsden being on speed dial for second best love interest needed.
X-MEN
The Notebook
Superman returns
I'm sure there's more

Supposedly keep the leaks and virulent anti down.
In practice, vote of no confidence from the studio.
