You are in a very small minority, friend. I actually hated the book and don’t really care about the musical, but I may watch this movie at some point. People I respect seem to think it’s good.

book sucked. musical is good. this was better than average. i liked it more than the majority of Disney's live actions.
actually, the only disney live actions i "liked" were Maleficient (1,) Beauty and the Beast, and Aladin. Maybe Cruella. I thought it was well done, but don't every want to watch it again.

I read the book way back when. It was ok. Never cared to see the show. I'm good.
I absolutely hated the novel. It was a chore to get through. That said, I loved the stage show and enjoyed the film. The play/film and the original source material are actually very different. If you had seen the play, I think you may have enjoyed the film at least somewhat, because the movie is a near perfect adaptation of act one of the stage show.

I have about 40 minutes left. I wanted to try to get it in before the sugar bowl. I’m enjoying it. The music is hot, hot, hot. The choreography is good, I like the little herky jerky dance movements that Ariana Grande does. Speaking of her, she has some fricking pipes, and this is showcasing how good of an actress she is.
It started to slow down around the 1 hour 45 minute mark but I’m still in for the final half hour plus I have left

Best part of the movie IMO

While I'm not a fan of her usual "breathy" style of pop singing, you can tell she trained her voice hard to get that musical theater sound needed. I was surprised at how good she was from an acting standpoint. She was probably the highlight of the movie for me (I knew that Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey could sing and act).

We only suffer through this to get laid. I am not going to watch this without the guarantee of ROI

Never read the book. Was entertained at the Broadway show. Didnt care for the film. At All
I cant yet decide which film I liked less, this or Barbie. Only because I really havent spent much time thinking of Barbie since I watched it. Goslings campiness might help that movie edge out this one, tho

Just takin' the easy shots. I guess it takes all kinds. Seems you'd have been able to fake it, for the sake of the gal, but commendable that you call it as you see it.
Well done. You watched what most guys wouldn't.

Aside from everything being sung, I am NOT a fan of DEI in the movies. Okay, so you have characters important to the movie that are black. Okay. I'm with you on that. There's some talented black actors and actresses out there. I'm cool with it all the way up until every fricking frame of a movie HAS TO HAVE at least one DEI NPCs. I got through at most ten minutes of this movie and was so sick of every scene switch had to have a black person in it, no matter how insignificant the role, that it took away from the film's enjoyment.

Was sort of forced to watch it last night, finally:
It was good enough to sit through once - they did a good job revealing the provenance of the iconography of The Wizard of Oz, which was cool
It was gorgeously shot and nicely scored (although I didn't know the songs, never having seen the musical, and none of them seemed particularly catchy to me; it was more like the typical Broadway feel where they just randomly scene spoken lines)
Bowen Yang is an unlikable little bitch. I'm sure this was a big break for him, but to what? He was a caricature of a trope
I found Grande's appearance off-putting for the entirety of the movie. I just kept trying to figure out WTF
The black gal actually looked pretty cool in her make up
The shite with the animals is just plain weird
Too much like a comic book movie in that the characters just seem fake and with no depth. I will never understand why people like that kind of thing.
Michelle Yeoh was probably the highlight - but it was funny that she still had a Chinese accent
I LOLed at the "reveal" that the green witch was the result of the black mom cheating on the white dad with a black dude while on a bender

She was out of place with that thick accent, and her singing was atrocious.

I wouldn’t say it sucks, but I was pretty underwhelmed. I didn’t find it good until the last half or so of the movie, when they finally went to Oz. The first half of the movie, maybe even up to 75%, was pretty boring IMO.
I would not watch again if I randomly found it live on TV, which in my mind is typically my metric for if a movie is good or not.
