80's horror movies generally were basically B movies, which were aimed at young males. Things weren't politically correct, and nothing was presented too seriously.
Maybe if you want to take this to a deeper level (way deeper than it needs to be
):
In the 80's and 90's, boobs offended the conservative Christians, which were not aligned with the media companies. So it was ok to do so. "Let the boys have their harmless fun"
Now, boobs offend the feminist and metoo groups, which are a lot more tied into the media and their mindset. "this is despicable objectification"; and we don't get that nearly as much.

The 80s also had horror movies that really ended up being unintentional comedies.
Return of the Living Dead and House were good examples.

there are a lot of truly shitty horror movies from the 80s
Yes, but some were so horribly bad they were great. Ghoulies comes to mind. One of my all time favorites.

Terrorvision is one of the greatest 80s horror movies. Checks all the boxes.

Probably because you were younger and easier to impress.

It seemed like a cheesy horror flick came out every week and I saw most of them. For every Phantasm or Manitou, there were a bunch of forgettable movies. But they rarely failed to entertain in some respect. And Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the closest thing I remember to the sadistic Saw and Hostel movies.
