I see Avengers might not pass it. While a good movie, I don’t remember why it was highest grossing all time

Because James Cameron.
Look, James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron...James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is... James Cameron

It kicked off the 3D fad that was popular for a few years. It was a great theater experience.

It was revolutionary from a cgi/motion capture perspective.
The story was basically pocahontas, which was a huge movie.

I was going to blame it on the Chinese but according to Wikipedia, it is only the 36th highest grossing film over there.
So I guess we're the assholes this time.

Yep. Boatloads of people flocked to the theaters just for the 3D experience.

While the plot was Dances with Smurfs the CGI was amazing and the movie looked gorgeous. Also it started the 3D fad and stayed in theaters forever. Also James Cameron

But he still probably has subliminal brainwashing weaved into the frames, because I will never understand why so many people saw it multiple times despite it being Pocahantas with giant Smurfs.

The marketing for that movie was brilliant.
If you watched shows that were catered to women, they only showed the footage that highlighted the forbidden romance aspect of the movie and was from the director of Titanic.
If you watched shows that were catered to men or any sports during that time, they only showed footage that highlighted the action and adventure aspect of the movie and was from the director of Terminator and Aliens.

1. James Cameron's first film since Titanic (12 year gap)
2. CGI / 3-D

Just because it wasnt original doesnt mean it wasnt good. In fact, it being the 100th time that story has been told kinda proves its incredible.
