Why 'The Empire Strikes Back' is overrated

The general consensus is that the second in the original Star Wars trilogy - released 40 years ago - is the best. In fact, it’s to blame for the franchise’s problems, writes Nicholas Barber.
It’s 40 years this month since The Empire Strikes Back was released, and for most of that time the second film in the Star Wars series has been enshrined as the best: the darkest, the most complex, the most mature. Directed by Irvin Kershner, it’s the Star Wars episode with the highest score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (94%) and from viewers on Imdb (8.7), and the one that is said to elevate the saga as a whole. “It is because of the emotions stirred in Empire,” wrote Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times when the film was re-released in 1997, “that the entire series takes on a mythic quality that resonates back to the first and ahead to the third. This is the heart.”
I wish I could agree. This might come across as a contrarian hot take, but it seems obvious to me that the best film in the Star Wars series is, in fact, Star Wars. (I know we’re supposed to call it ‘A New Hope’ these days, but it was called Star Wars when it came out in 1977, so that’s good enough for me.) What’s more, it seems obvious that The Empire Strikes Back is the source of all the franchise’s problems. Whatever issues we geeks grumble about when we’re discussing the numerous prequels and sequels, they can all be traced back to 1980.

Then came The Empire Strikes Back – a gloomier film, admittedly, but also a slower, stodgier, more contrived, convoluted and repetitive one. Again, I’m not being perverse here. In 1980, several critics were underwhelmed, including Vincent Canby of the New York Times, who stated that the sequel wasn’t “as fresh and funny and surprising and witty” as Star Wars. It was, he believed, “a big, expensive, time-consuming, essentially mechanical operation”.

If Empire is overrated then the entire franchise is vastly overrated and everyone has been wasting their time watching these movies.
If a bright spot in a franchise sucks then everything else really sucks.
So what's the author's point?
Star Wars just sucks as a whole?

This is the correct answer.

I don’t think that Empire is overrated, but the introduction of an obvious Muppet as a main character kept it from being a near-perfect sci-fantasy film.

ah, its not really contrarian to say Star Wars is the best, i however strongly disagree with

The author should’ve just titled his article “Why my website needs clicks”

Empire being the best is a modern internet fan opinion. Some say they always felt this way, but I never used to hear it. Back in 1983, Empire was considered the weakest of the three by everyone I knew, but still good. I think a lot of them are just pissy about the Ewoks, so they hate Jedi, and others might have some other agenda. Maybe they're just queering off with Kevin Smith. Who knows?

Well not for me.
It's the first Star Wars movie we bought back in the early 80s at Video Store prices...$89.99. Empire was the movie we felt, well this is worth this ridiculous price for a VHS tape.
It's the movie we talked about on the playground. Kids had At-Ats and that toy where you could freeze Han.
I mean we all watched Star Wars but the movie we kept coming back to was Empire.
Empire just has a different vibe than all the others, probably because Lucas didn't direct it.

That’s my favorite episode

Empire doesn’t follow the same patterns as most movies. The bad guys win. Everyone loves yoda. Empire subverts expectations in all the right ways. Also, the action is way better than Star Wars. As a stand-alone film, my favorite was always ROTJ. Ewoks didn’t bother me until I found out they were originally supposed to be wookies.

Star Wars as a whole is overrated. People do nothing but bitch and moan about this franchise.

1983 not only pre internet it was pre-video, pre-all movies on movie channels. Star Wars wasn't on HBO until a month or 2 before Jedi was released. We couldn't watch the movies over and over like now and what you heard was limited to your group. At that time i would have said Star Wars was the best, but by the early 90's when i was older and had all 3 on tape was when i first started to say Empire, but i go back and forth the biggest hitch being it doesn't really work as a stand alone movie like Star Wars, but it was said before the internet/social media.

We’re pretty much there now. I don’t agree that Empire is overrated. But the entire franchise as a whole is garbage. One good, one great, and the rest absolute dreck makes the franchise not worth the attention it gets.

Jedi is great, and Rogue One is good.
