Well, the people who made it had this thing called "talent". Nice to have, but only optional nowadays.

This and Dr. Zhivago are two of the most beautifully photographed films ever made.

He does mention how Lean drew on The Searchers for LOA

Peter O’Toole as Lawrence is still the best acting performance in history. I know he was in a few films before Lawrence, but that has to be the single greatest breakout role of any actor ever.
While I agree it was a great performance, I'm honestly not sure that was the best performance in the film.
Everyone was fantastic. Sir Alec, Quinn, Hawkins, Ferrer, Sharif, Quayle, Rains

They're way up there, and LOA has a legit case. But I was always much more drawn to the naturalistic looks of Days of Heaven, Tree of Life, and of course.... Barry Lyndon (which I consider the best looking film ever made).
Lean, though, always had such a great photographic eye . Just look at the framing and lighting of the opening shot of Brief Encounter, which was early in his career and a shoestring compared to something like LOA. He would have been a world class stills photographer.
