Why is there little scientific advances in the GOT universe?

The saga lasts for hundreds, maybe thousands of years if one goes back to the First Men. Yet it seems it stays stuck in Middle Ages forever. No medical advances, should have discovered gunpowder by now, It's as if the civilization stays stuck in place forever.

Because it isn’t much fun otherwise 
ETA: I find it incredibly interesting to think about a society that is generally at its peak in terms of technology and the only different is generally knowledge applied using the same tools.

It’s fantasy. Same suspension of disbelief for Lord of the Rings.
It’s funny that for all of the influence that the high Middle Ages has on our cultural zeitgeist, it only lasted a few hundred years as it is portrayed in pop culture and in fantasy.

There was some. The first men were basically wiped out because the Andals had steel weapons.
Also, you could theorize why major advances haven't happened. You have unpredictable seasons. At any day, you could have the start of a catastrophic winter that lasts a decade. If you know that is around the corner, most of your attention is just on survival rather than improvement.

That kind of makes sense, but it also seems like it would advance technology out of necessity, just like warfare. Of which there seems to be a lot also.
