Because it isnt high brow enough for critics. Its why critic ratings are useless. Has a solid audience score.

Most agree its a good movie.

It's a love/hate movie. I hate it. My wife likes it. When it came out, I had already grown out of kids movies. I really don't like any of the "kids movies" of the 90's because at that point I was a teenager. There's nothing a teenager hates more than a kids movie.

I think Hook might be John Williams' most underrated score. It's fantastic, and the film is fun to rewatch.

I still don't understand what the hell happened with the croc at the end though. It's taxidermied, but still capable of eating Hook and belching.

I know it's a fantasy film, but even as a kid, I had trouble going along with that logical leap.

Bob Hoskins and Rufio were also pretty great.

A lot of BS and over hype accompanied it. Julia Robert's and Dustin were hot at the time.
But to me Dustin stole the show. Was great in the role.

Kills me that Spielberg hates it so much.

Probably why people rate it so poorly. They want be in that level of critique. But Spielberg also gave us Kathleen Kennedy, so his opinions arent always golden

This is one of the key ingredients in the hate stew.

Julia, Dustin, Robin, all great and well respected actors. John Williams did the score.

Yet the movie still sucked.

Absolutely nailed Smee. Though I remember watching it in the theater as a four-year-old and wondering why the crew liked him so much. They bullied him in the Disney cartoon.

Not sure how this board feels scout Boondocks Saints, but look up it's RT. I remember loving that movie so much, but then shocked when I saw how much critics loathed it.

Because it fricking sucks.

High expectations turn "good" movies into disappointments and low expectations do the opposite.

Spielberg
Julia Roberts coming right off Pretty Woman a year ago
Robin Williams
Hoffman

Hefty budget for its time, made a modest profit.

It wasn't "Spielberg special" and critics were all too happy to jab those on top.

Yea, except for the fact Bob Hoskins stole every scene he was in.

Hook is great.

Boondock Saints is garbage. It has a few decent action scenes, and I like the brothers fine, but it's just so full of overacting and bad acting that's it's almost unwatchable to me. I was on the bandwagon in college too, I thought it was great back then. But it's just not. The Rocco character alone makes it awful.

Sorry not sorry.

The only more generational kids movie that I can think of is Goonies. Huge difference between first experiencing them as a kid and seeing them first as an adult.
