re: Why are the SW prequels fair game for criticism, but TFA somehow sacred?

The question posed was to point out something TFA did better than the OT. Rey was introduced to the audience better than Luke was. That's all I'm saying.

I don't see it.

Luke had the only family he'd ever known murdered by Stormtroopers, then was tutored by Old Ben Kenobi.

Rey was just bad at bargaining and then hand-holding with FN-Dy-No-Mite! And happening upon the millennium Falcon.

But why!?
Help me understand why, with many of the same issues, it's so different?

Is it because you are older than when the prequels came out? Is it because of the casting choices? Script? Visual effects?

You sound desperate for people to agree with you.

I didn't like the prequels (AS MUCH, I still like them overall), because they ditched the humor, they ditched character development, they ditched emotion, and they inserted CGI, they inserted boring political drama, they inserted stale actors.

Largely the casting choices were fine. I thought Ewan McGregor was good. Natalie Portman is a proven actress. Hell, I've even seen a movie called shattered glass where Hayden Christiansen does a good job. The problem was George Lucas. Watch the documentary about the development of Phantom Menace and you can see how Lucas has zero passion.

The movie was a soap opera under the guise of the Star Wars universe.

TFA brought so many of the elements of the original trilogy back that the prequels ditched.

You act like it's unbelievable that someone could possibly like TFA. It's fine if you don't like the movie, but to not be able to understand why someone else would, it makes me think you're being a contrarian to just to start shite. It's quite a ridiculous stance.

Her character was finished being introduced by the time she found the Falcon. I'm talking about the scenes before she even meets BB-8. They were exceptionally well done.

You are so biased towards your stance that TFA is bad that it's not even worth taking you seriously anymore, if anyone ever did.

Rey has no one there for her at all and she has to scavenge miles out in the desert just to earn a ration or 2. Why is Luke's backstory somehow so much better in your eyes.

Specifically whose acting? Certainly not everyone's?

The acting was just better overall IMO. As an ensemble the cast of The Force Awakens did a better job than the cast of the original trilogy. That has more to do with directing, however, as Abrams seemed to let the actors act instead of just reading lines off a script.

Darth Vader was iconic in ANH. A masked menace. Powerful. Imposing. And with that Voice. He was the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Agreed. But beyond that what did we know about him? Absolutely nothing. He was imposing but hardly complex. There was no depth to his character at all until the end of Empire.

Which is why I believe The Force Awakens does a better job at fleshing out its antagonist then A New Hope did.

I thought it was hilarious. Not the forced humor into Every scene, but the ridiculousness of Kylo Ren. The giant fricking Death Star planet. How people who'd never picked up a lightsaber were suddenly badass with it. The over the top indestructible space fighter scenes.
The whole thing, to me, seemed like a spoof.

I'll go see it again. They already have my money. But it isn't the masterpiece some seem to think it is any more than the prequels were the pile of shite they were made out to be.

I loved Christopher Lee in AOTC.

This. It's convenient to say Darth Vader is blah blah blah, but if you left the theater in 1977 you wouldn't know that. The sequels of Star Wars enhanced its own appeal. The same thing will happen with TFA if the sequels are good.

The premise of this thread was you asking why people regard TFA highly, but you keep making the same tired points over and over again in the most abrasive manner possible.

Go ahead, name your favorite Star Wars movie and I'll dismantle the ever living frick out of it like you seem to love doing with TFA.

Thinking it isn't deserving of lavish, unfounded praise =/= a bad movie.

Far better storytelling. Being a better telling of the hero's journey. Not going from piloting a futuristic dirt bike to flying a "junk" milleniunm falcon into the damn sand with no repercussions.

She wasn't awful.

People seem to take ANY criticism as being sexist or racist or being a troll.

But she wasn't this untouchable actress in the role either.

And plenty of scenes were cringeworthy.

Put it this way. If the prequels had never happened, this movie wouldn't be seen as glowingly as it was.

Darth Vader was the empire's hitman and he was a badass.

Plans get stolen? Send Vader
Obi Wan Kenobi sensed? Send Vader
X wings break off from the main group? "Follow me" No fricking questions asked

The issues with the prequels involved a boring storyline about complicated space politics, a forced love story between characters with no chemistry, and empty characters.

This story was a derivative space adventure with likeable characters. I'm at a loss to find the prequel's crippling issues in TFA.

Was it great film? Nope. It was good film that had the fun and adventure of the original trilogy. The problem you're having is that your criticisms haven't made sense.

Darth Vader was a Badass in ANH.

Definitely not "blah blah blah."

That being said, I'll still see the sequels when they come out. That doesn't mean I'll act like they can't be criticized and that anyone who disagrees with me should "kill themselves."

I had to avoid this board before I saw the movie.

Ironically, a few attention whores working overtime have made me want to avoid this board after seeing the movie.
