William Wallace.

Takes skill and cunning to lead a decisive underdog.

Jon Snow got his army nearly wiped out

Easy answer is Mel Gibson’s character from The Patriot

A more or less fully fictionalized character (Maximus) and a mostly fictionalized version of a real person (Wallace)?

I'm leaning towards Alexander or Julius Caesar - survival is key, but if you lived, those boys took care of their soldiers.

If we limit it to late Middle Ages, I would lean towards "Black Eagle" (Guesclin) or Henry V.

He was never going to drive England into the sea. but he won at Stirling bridge despite being outnumbered. Even after Falkirk, he kept fighting. All you can ask of a leader.

Alexander The Great. Started leading his army into battle at age 18 and for the next 15 years he never lost a battle before dying of unknown causes at age 32.
