This may/may not help anyone that is expecting a pale, emotionless girl, vampires, and CGI werewolves with abs...
Screen Rant's 5 Reasons why Hunger Games isn't Twighlight
The very positive reviews from my favorite critics have swayed me to give this a shot.

You consider events happening after your great great grand kids have died of old age not too distant future?
What the frick is long term thinking/planning to you?
Think of it in the other direction: would you consider the Revolutionary War the not too distant past?
And that is the shortest it could be.
It can just as easily be considering the Black Death being not too distant in the past.
I would call not too distant future being like 50.
You might be able to stretch that to 100.
Beyond that is just absurd.

I read the book and thought it was decent. I'm not sure why this movie is getting the Twilight hate considering it isn't really that similar. I mean, there's a love story involved, but most movies have that. I'm not saying it's going to be the best movie ever, but I think it'll be ok.
To the OP, it's not the Running Man in the aspect that in The Running Man Arnold was fighting against designated combatants who weren't actually trying to get free. Their only job was to kill Arnold. In The Hunger Games, these kids have to kill each other to survive. The last person standing wins. While it is similar, it isn't the same.

So I have a 12 year old boy who looks at the previews of this movie with mild interest and curiosity. He has not read the books. I don't know what to say to him because what I know about the movie/books I have just learned in this thread.
(getting to the point)...
Is this movie (and the books) appropriate for a 12 yr old? Keep in mind that I am one of those parents that tries to adhere to the ratings.

When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She...will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.
1) That makes no sense...so they choose kids?
2) So another one of those totally unbelievable outmatched female kicks-arse because women in movies can fight like Bruce Lee and have the strength of a thousand armies. Gotcha!
And if you're picked at random, why have some trained their whole lives?

The age range runs from like 13-18 or something, and it was her sister's first year of eligibility.

Well, the author does give the character a background that explains why she would excel in this situation. Her father died when she was young leaving her to provide for her family, which she did by hunting (which is supposed to be illegal and makes tracking/hunting/archery skills somewhat unique). She basically survives due to her superior knowledge of forestry and archery skills

actually it seems more like "The Long Walk" than the running man. another Stephen King Novella.

Well, I wouldn't have had any problem reading the books when I was twelve. I certainly read worse. Interview with the Vampire when I was in 5th grade. There's violence, but that's about it.
I wouldn't stress over it too much.

1) Its a lottery of kids 12-18, with increasing probability as you get older or if you accept extra resources from the government. Its residual punishment from a civil war. Districts have their kids taken from them and they have to watch them die basically.
2) It isn't like she is magically finds that she can compete just because she is the protagonist.
She spent pretty much her entire life in the woods, hunting and foraging to feed her family. As a result, she is pretty much the only one with survival skills in a wilderness.
Some of the rich districts consider it an honor.
So where Katniss volenteered to save her sister, they do it for glory. They already predetermine who is going in those districts (even though it is questionable rules wise)

I'm just pissed I didn't think of this after seeing Battle Royale. She claims she had never heard of the novel or movie. Yeah right..
Posted on 3/23/12 at 12:13 pm to UnluckyTiger
Yeah, all of the other comparisons fall flat. Hunger Games is the american version of Battle Royale. It shouldn't be compared to anything else. I'm tired of seeing people post "oh, it's like running man crossed with 1982 crossed with ender's game." No, it's fricking Battle Royale you philistines.
Posted on 3/23/12 at 12:19 pm to Siderophore
I haven't read it so I don't know but it's JUST Rattle Royale?
It seems like it's another take on the short-story...The Lottery with cinematic elements of Battle Royal, Running Man, Logan's Run, Death Race, Surviving the Game.
So she's like Hanna?

That is kind of a really loose connection.
So all derivations of self reliance is "like Hanna?"

I don't know I haven't seen or read it...but I'm asking...and wondering (knowing Hollywood) is she over-the-top like Hanna?...I use Hanna because it was over the top "kick arse" little girl where you just roll your eyes for two hours...I guess you could use the girl in "Kick arse" as an example too.

To be fair, the majority of self appointed haters had never even heard of Battle Royale until THG series came out.
Posted on 3/23/12 at 12:42 pm to Zamoro10
Then no, it's not really over the top
She does make one eyebrow raising shot with a bow, but it's made clear to be one of her strong points

Fail. Hanna was a great movie.
If you don't wanna go see the movie, don't get go see it. No one cares why you think you're not going to like it.
