TNG is fine television as well. DS9 is underrated

These are the best two series of Trek. But the original series is good because of its novelty and originality for the times. I personally think The Visitor of DS9 has to be the height of Star Trek series.

AVOID the Bad Reboot productions of Star Trek, they suck really, really, really, really bad.

Most would probably disagree, but I like going by the time line.

So, I would watch Star Trek Enterprise first.

It's about the first starship Earth set out in to explore and sets the foundation for their relationships with other species like Vulcans, Romulans, Kingons, Andorians,etc..

Again, many here may not like the series, but I thought it is very underrated. Loved learning more about the Andorians that you only get a taste of through the other series.

The first JJ Abrams movie was entertaining, but it wasn’t anything like classic Star Trek.

Star Trek is all about exploring current social issues through the lens of science fiction, and people working together to solve those problems through empathy, science, logic, reason, and decisive action. It’s not usually filled with laser sword swashbuckling and spaceship dogfighting. It’s more about making difficult choices to help the greater good. JJ Abrams didn’t understand that. He made a Star Wars movie set in the Star Trek universe. That’s by no means a bad movie or an unentertaining movie, just not traditional Trek.

Just kidding.
I figured easier to digest the various first part versions before moving into the future.

I would start at select episodes of The Original Series (which will be identified at a later time, this List is overbroad but has summaries so you can decide), and then the movies, The Motion Picture (1979) II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) III: The Search for Spock (1984), Then the reboot movies, Star Trek (2009) Into Darkness (2013).

WTF? You include the fricking horrible Into Darkness but not IV or VI?

Find yourself a best episode list for the original series, and watch it until you decide whether you dig it or not. If you like it, watch it all.

If not move on to TNG and do the same. If you don't like either enough to continue watching, I wouldn't bother with the rest - Star Trek just isn't your thing.

I didn't enjoy the original series that much, watched most of the better episodes. The movies I liked better. I would watch those first, skip final frontier and go to undiscovered country. Then if you enjoy those go right into TNG series. I really liked TNG. Then start with maybe DS9 into Voyager. I liked Voyager better than DS9, but both were ok. I think my bias for Babylon 5 made me dislike DS9 a bit. I didn't keep up with all the series after voyager and didn't really enjoy the reboot movies.

Where to start with Star Trek?

Commit to watching three episodes of the original series:
• Space Seed (Action/Intrigue)
• City on the Edge of Forever (Hard Sci-Fi)
• The Trouble with Tribbles (Comedy)

If you want to continue from there, watch the original series from the start. The first episode, "The Man Trap", was selected to start the series in place of it's pilot episodes because it's a great "monster of the week" story. I wouldn't start with any of the pilot episodes. There are good reasons for why NBC chopped up the first pilot into the back story for later episodes, and aired the second pilot out of order in the first season. They're not great introductions to the series itself.

Watch all the originals (Trouble with Tribbles is my favorite). Then the movies. Any of the tv versions are junk if you are a true Trekkie

Without really going over the episodes, I'd have to say I really like the episode Arena where Kirk has to fight the Gorn

I liked Into Darkness, and for these purposes the alt version of Khan fits the lesson, otherwise the movie does not vex me.
IV and VI are fine, but not priority IMO.

My recs are also based on not overloading the OP, as he requested. Otherwise, yeah watch everything.

It depends on what you prefer.

If you want the "authentic" take (ie: watching it as most "old school" types have) then you would watch:

The Original Series (66-69)
The Animated Series (73-74)
***The Motion Picture (1979)
***Wrath of Khan (1982)
***II: Search for Spock (1984)
***III: Voyage Home (1986)
Next Generation (87-94)
***IV: Final Frontier (1989)
***V: Undiscovered Country (1991)
X*** Generations (1994)
X*** First Contact (1996)
Deep Space 9 (93-99)
X*** Insurrection (1998)
Voyager (95-2001)
X*** Nemesis (2002)
Enterprise (2001-2005)
R*** Star Trek (2009)
R*** Into Darkness (2013)
R*** Beyond (2016)
Discovery (2017-Present)
Picard (2020-2023)
Lower Decks (2020-Present)
Prodigy (only 1 season, seems to be cancelled now - 2021)
Strange New Worlds (2022-Present)

*** = TOS cast movies
X*** = Next Generation cast movies
R*** = Reboot movies (the TOS characters but new actors, actresses, backgrounds and stories)

If you want the chronology (which things happened first within the Star Trek universe's timeline):

Enterprise (all seasons) in-universe years: 2151-2155
Discovery (S1 and S2 because spoilers) years: 2256-2258
Strange New Worlds (all seasons) years: 2259-TBD
The Original Series (all seasons) years: 2265-2269
The Animated Series (there is only one season) years: 2269-2270
***The Motion Picture: sometime in the 2270s
***II: Wrath of Khan: 2285
***III: Search for Spock: 2285
***IV: The Voyage Home: 2286
***V: The Final Frontier: 2287
***VI: The Undiscovered Country: 2293
Next Generation (all seasons) years: 2364-2370
X*** Generations: 2293 but also sometime around (or maybe just after) the end of the Next Generation series (it's a sort of crossover between TOS and TNG)
Deep Space Nine (all seasons) years: 2369-2375
Voyager (all seasons, since it takes place far, far away) years: 2371-2378
X*** First Contact: 2373
X*** Insurrection: 2375
Prodigy (single season): 2383
X*** Nemesis: 2379
Lower Decks (all seasons) years: 2380-TBD
Picard (all seasons) years: 2399-2402
Discovery (S3 and 4 because spoilers) years: 3188-TBD

Live long-n-prosper-n-shite, yo!

After my lengthy post, there are some things you can definitely do without. You can shitcan all of Discovery (although I really liked S1, most people didn't).

You can skip movies III & IV. Some people don't like V, but I found it decent.

Enterprise: never watched more than an episode or two so I can't give a good opinion.

Some liked Voyager, some didn't. I was never able to watch it consistently, but it never really resonated with me.

Lower Decks: Some like it, I haven't watched.

Prodigy: only 1 season then cancelled, it's basically Voyager: After They Came Home. You can probably skip this and miss nothing.

Picard: Meh. The first season didn't thrill me. I never watched the 2nd but heard it was trash. The third season was a love-letter to all the TNG fans, so watch at least S3.

TOS, TAS, TNG and BNW are all in the classic Star Trek story model. DS9 is a darker series but fricking phenomenal.

The Next Generation
Deep Space 9
The Original Series
Enterprise
Voyager

In that order is how I became a fan.
