Shawshank just isn't that great. It's good but... constant praise worthy?

I agree. Great acting and a nice little story with a happy ending. But nothing groundbreaking or especially memorable.

I can live with the downvotes.

The Departed is probably the best answer.

That's exactly the type of movie I was trying to imply, maybe poorly worded in the OP.

Over-the-top, always entertaining, you can jump in any moment type of movie.

When I rewatched Training Day recently after about the 10th time, it just felt like that type of movie if it was more PG, would be on a TNT rotation every Saturday in the 2000s like Shawshank.

I’m not big on subtitled movies, but this is a fricking masterpiece.

No Country for Old Men was the first thing that immediately came to mind. Those are my top three movies.

Does it insist upon itself?

Training Day and Wolf of Wall Street are great picks.

I would add The Hangover and maybe 40 Year Old Virgin.

Rewatchable

The Prestige

Probably my vote for best movie of the 2000s in terms of entertainment and quality.

But...there's something about some movies that are Shawshank small, claustrophobic... Intimate... Quotable... Don't get me wrong, The Prestige is strangely rewatchable despite knowing the reveal...

I've said here the real magic trick is how rewatchable the movie is. But you have to put in more effort than Shawshank and Goodfellas and Training Day where it feels you're just along for the ride, popping in and out of the movie while doing stuff at home.
