Has Hollywood ever tackled this? Who did it best?
I would love to see an epic movie about one of history’s greatest military leader ever

Waterloo

It's about as epic as can get.

No CGI, a million extras.

Real re-enactments.

Fun fact: Stanley Kubrick tried to make a Napoleon movie for years and years. Wanted Jack Nicholson for the role. He even got the Romanian army to agree to put up tens of thousands of soldiers for battle scenes. But he could never nail the script, there was concerns about the cost, etc.

The true answer is, there is no good napoleon movie. As alluded to above, Kubrick tried and damn near made what probably would have been one of the greatest films of all time...and THE definitive napoleon film.

But it never happened. Truth is, napoleon may be too big of a film to tackle, especially now, when it's hard to finance anything other than comic book movies. To do it right, you're probably looking at $150 million-plus movie.

I do remember HBO saying a couple years ago that they had tapped Cari Fukunaga to direct what would be the closest thing they could to Kubrick long lost napoleon film. Apparently they had all of his old research and were basing everything off that. But that was like 2 yrs ago and I haven't heard anything sense.

Obviously it’s not “about Napoleon”, but he is a character in The Count of Monte Cristo and it is a very cool look at that period in European and French history.

Definitely worth a watch.

Time Bandits. Ian Holm portrays the greatest version of Napoleon that film has ever seen, or will ever see.

Sadly not many. There is a decent one on Netflix with Gerard Depardu (sp?)
One of my favorite figures to read about, movies not as much.

Actually there was a miniseries recently that wasn't bad. I think it's on prime
