Whatever happened to movie musicals?

I just finished watching the first musical I can remember watching in the theatre as a kid, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and remembering how much I love it, and thinking back on all the musicals I love, They seemed to be everywhere at one point, and then poof, gone.
Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Willie Wonka, Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Oklahoma, Yankee Doodle Dandy, West Side Story, Grease, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Fame, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, My Fair Lady, The King and I, and on and on and on....
There are a few of late like Rocketman for instance, but overall it seems like, besides animated Disney movies which I do appreciate, there’s a real lack of them. What gives?

Weird time to ask is I feel like they’ve had a resurgence of late like the PT Barnum movie with Hugh Jackson and the bio pics that have been popular the last few years

West Side Story comes out later this year.
We had La La Land, Greatest Showman, and Les Miserables in the same decade. Seems like a good amount?

Even in the Golden Age, musicals did not do well overseas
As the foreign box office has become more and more important, musicals disappeared

Could Pitch Perfect count?

I personally love old movie musicals, but the production costs for the big ones were rather exorbitant for their time, so you can probably trace their demise back to the late 60s/early 70s when Hollywood was in bad shape financially.
The new generation of directors found success with grittier, more realistic films during this time. Cabaret was a hit, but again, its content was darker, and it wasn't a conventional, old school musical.
Audience tastes had changed, so the studios didn't have any reason to invest heavily in a genre the audience no longer had an appetite for.

That makes sense. It saddens me, but it makes good sense.

What do you mean by lack of them? They aren't as popular as they were in the 50s and 60s but there are still several released every year.
Of the top of my head in the last 10 years we've had A Star Is Born, LaLa Land, The Greatest Showman, Cats, Pitch Perfect 1-3, Anna and the Apocalypse, Into the Woods, Mama Mia 1&2, Mary Poppins Returns, Yesterday, The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Rock of Ages, Joyful Noise, Jersey Boys, Burlesque Les Mis...
Then there are all the animated movies from like Moana, Coco, Sing, Frozen 1&2, Rio 1&2, Strange Magic, Book of Life etc; the Disney live action remakes like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King etc; and there have been a shitload of musical specials on TV like The Grinch, A Christmas Story, Rocky Horror, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Hairspray; then the biographical rock musicals like Love and Mercy, Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody....
shite man, I didn't realize how many damn musicals I've seen in the last decade and I know I'm missing a bunch more that came out in the time span many of which I saw.

Not a large fanbase for that shite I would guess mostly females
It feels like 2× as long as any movie enjoyable to me
It's like Turner classic with pops. I bite my tongue but most of it bores me to hell

Starting this thread isn’t the strangest way I’ve seen to come out of the closet. Congrats on finally accepting yourself.
