From not having "computers" to a lifelike, 3D computer generated movie would be pretty mind blowing.
But they had this to go off of at the time.
Talkies were mind blowing to them. You got to keep in mind that in 1920 they were nearly 20 years away from The Wizard of Oz. I really don’t think they would have seen much of a difference between the original Star Wars and Avatar, except that Star Wars was a much better movie. I feel pretty confident Star Wars would resonate with them especially in the aftermath of WWI, but I don’t think Avatar would.
With concepts and what is being shown, the Blade Runner films would floor them. If we’re just going on what would entertain and enthrall them and bewilder them technologically, the answer is simple: The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien based it on his time in WWI, so that would very much resonate with that generation.

You could probably answer all but the optimism with Kubrick films.

I'll give it more thought, but I think one movie could answer all 4 questions.
quote:The Matrix. For 1999, it introduced the bar for amazing stop-motion camera and frames.
What Film/TV would you show the to "WOW" them?
quote:The Matrix. To them, technology was large scale industrialization. I don't think they could grasp how advanced technology would become on a microscopic scale.
What Film/TV Would shock them?
quote:The Matrix. If we believe humans will overcome.
What Film/TV would leave the hopeful of the future?
quote:The Matrix. We sort of live in a dystopian future for them. Even with the instant connection we all share, we're still fighting over boarders and such ridiculousness.
What film/Tv would leave them depressed about the future?

Well that cat was out of the bag by 1920. If this thread had been conducted say 4 years ago, my answer would be different. Once the Bolsheviks took over, some variant of that was inevitable.

Just for shock factor, I think almost anything about WWII or the Holocaust would be the most shocking and horrific watch for an average adult alive in 1920.
They were already somewhat exposed to Science Fiction or fantasy, occult mysticism type stuff was probably more popular then than it is now. Moving Pictures were getting crazier every day, even in their time.
But the prospect of another devastating world war and/or genocide would be terrifying.

I would show the person from 1920 The Godfather II. It won’t be too shocking because half the movie is set in his time, and the other half is 50 years in his future.
That way you slow-walk the explosion of technology to him as you show him the mid-point between his time and yours. And it’s a great movie. Win/win.
Damn, that’s a great call
Then you could hit them with Goodfellas and Casino to really frick them up

What Film/TV would you show the to "WOW" them?
Yeah Jurassic Park would have to be the one I think.
Several have mentioned Matrix but I think that’s a bridge too far. It’s sci fi and the Tech was revolutionary even for turn of the century viewers. They would have virtually no understanding of even basic computer technology so the concepts in the Matrix would be too foreign to register imo.
JP would be much more relatable/understandable for someone from the early 20th century imo.
My one question would be, and this may well be a dumb question, but how knowledgeable were most people about dinosaurs back then? Like would the average person have even really heard about them, much less seen images of them to a point where they would understand the significance of what they were viewing on screen?
At what point were they shown in museums and in enough places where most people would have been able to see them so they’d have a good idea of the history not just think they were seeing some monster movie?
What Film/TV Would shock them?
In what way?
Hell throw a dart at any movie collection and you’d find pretty much anything that would shock someone from 1920.
As another poster did a great job of pointing out, this would have been very soon after “The War to End All Wars”, so showing them anything from WWII would be legit shocking/saddening I would imagine.
What Film/TV would leave the hopeful of the future?
Rocky IV
Seriously though, just like there would be plenty to choose from to shock them, there are lots of movies that show how far we’ve come.
Perhaps The Right Stuff or Apollo 13 (or Armageddon obvi ) would be the best way to inspire hope in what we are able to accomplish as a species when we come together and focus our abilities on achieving great things.
What film/Tv would leave them depressed about the future?
T2
Again, you could show any number of things that would lead to a pessimistic view of the future. Just depends what aspect of life you’re trying to focus on.
Requiem for a Dream or Midnight Cowboy to show the horrors of the drug epidemic that wrecks lives every day, Taxi Driver to show the general decline in mental health and society’s inability to prevent people from falling through the cracks and the dangers that can pose, and Network to show the corrosive nature of the corporate media conglomerates and society’s destructive obsession with celebrity and entertainment and the dehumanization of the screen based culture.
Anything from the 70s really
Depending on where the person is from and their background, Boyz In The Hood could be a sobering view to show how crime and violence haunt our streets and how so many black youth are easily caught up in that cycle without any real means of escaping it.
I might go with Kramer vs Kramer, as a pretty universally relatable look at the decline of the traditional family and the psychological impact that can have on all involved. Just an all around depressing and bleak movie that I can’t imagine would leave many people feeling optimistic about the future
Great topic OP
