This is a really open-ended question because I want to see all different kinds of perspectives and stimulate discussion.
You can approach it from any angle you wish. For instance:
- History: a muscial era.
- Technology: an instrument, recording, playing, sharing.
- People: producers, artists.
- Bands: Game changers.
You can even go existential with it because I mean music in every sense of the word. Maybe a list would work?
To get you started:

Music - an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

Worst thing to happen to music was the dawn of the single instead of the album.
Anyone can put out one good song every year, but to put together a cohesive album actually takes effort.

I gotta go with the creation of the mp3. The fact one can store 1000s of songs on a device smaller than a cassette, download music anywhere, at anytime, and artists can share their newest creations with the world with just a single click is amazing and keeps people like me in the loop again.

I could have gone that angle, the negative angle, it would be easier. But I'm an optimist.
This is a celebration of music!

Justin Bieber. He's clearly what Ludwig Van had envisioned when he made Symphony No. 9.

Seriously, like the greatness of many other things we take for granted, the printing press.
I was 1st chair trumpet in the fifth & sixth grade bands but haven't played since then & have forgotten how to read music. I don't know much about instruments or recording devices either. I really do think printing lyrics and music is an important part of music overall. I also think mass printings of many different written words is one of the world's greatest advancements.

The best thing to ever happen to music was the dawn of the file sharing age.
It is now easier than ever for a indie band to get noticed and get their music out there.
Just so happens that it was also the worst thing to ever happen to The music industry
