Simple Question. This has nothing to doing with ratings.

My Nominee is The Miracle on Ice: USA defeats the USSR in Hockey 1980.

No way an ice hockey game can be considered the greatest event….its too niche of a sport.

I’m thinking boxing. Joe Louis vs Schmeling II deserves a shout because of the political ramifications. America vs Nazi Germany, Aryan vs Black, facism vs freedom, etc

Has to be Super Bowl!
A close second is the NCAA tournament and what it did for basketball, the NCAA tourney got more tv coverage then the NBA back in the 80's.

Joe Burrow dragging his dick all over Clemson in the National Championship in January of 2020. A little over a month later the world was shut down by a global pandemic and literally nothing has been the same.

That game wasn't just a hockey game.

the 2008 Summer Olympics has to be up there.

China put on a spectacular show for the world. Of course they did a good job of ensuring that the world did not see the dirty laundry.

-Michael Phelps and his record
-Usain Bolt
-The US gymnastics team vs the Chinese team and the drama and questionable results
-MIsty Mae and Kerry Walsh
-Nastia Liukin

Just so many great stories and in my opinion the greatest Olympic Games of my lifetime

I assume 'greatest" is not the most watched. Because that is easy. It's the FIFA World Cup and there is nothing close.

One of the most impactful was the Game of the Century between #1 UCLA and #2 UH in the Astrodome. March Madness doesn't happen without that game.

that basketball game looks like a miserable experience.

Glad they finally started to bring in portable bleachers into these football stadiums as to not look like a wasteland

Not saying it's objectively the best, but subjectively I love the vintage visual and the play by play call of Secretariat at Belmont in 1973. The announcer just nailed it and a race is just pure athletic competition. No officials making calls, no subjective judgment, no stopping. And of course Secretariat was just a tremendous machine.

It won’t win but a worthy mention is the 07 fiesta bowl with Oklahoma/Boise state

One of the best games ever and not even Hollywood could’ve done it better

Yep. Big upset from an upstart taking down a blue blood.

OU furious 25 point comeback culminating with Pick 6 with a minute left to take its first lead.

Boise Hook and ladder on 4th down from beyond midfield as time expired to send it to overtime.

Boise wildcat WR pass to score in OT and then Statue of Liberty on the 2 point try to win it.

Then Boise star player proposing to girlfriend during post-game celebration.

It was like a movie.

It was a three-hour tape delay in 1980, so it's not too much off.
