Opening scene of Ep 4 (the original movie), where the Star Destroyer is running down the rebel frigate.

You had to see it first run in 1977 to understand what a visual Tour De Force that moment was. It immediately set the tone for the movie as something we had never seen before, something we could never have imagined being so damn real onscreen. When that ship panned overhead, the sense of scope, of size, was incredible.

There might be "better" scenes, but you were already in the moment by then. This one brought you there.

Any scenes with Han Solo. Solo is by far the best character in the franchise. Its not even close.

The opera scene in ROTS is arguably the most important dialogue scene in Star Wars history.

Are we going to act like the Disney trilogy counts? Because the DT kind of made that scene pointless.

Lucas geared ROTJ towards kids for the toys. Original story boards had Wookies ripping Stormtroopers arms off. Lucas wanted to open up the toy merchandise. This is widely known. It is the reason for the fallout between Lucas and Gary Kurts. Maybe you should read up on it.

quote:

I could see where things were headed. The toy business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire. It's a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It's natural to make decisions that protect the toy business but that's not the best thing for making quality films.... The emphasis on the toys, it's like the cart driving the horse. If it wasn't for that the films would be done for their own merits. The creative team wouldn't be looking over their shoulder all the time.

RotJ wasn't released until 1983. In 1977, George Lucas made Star Wars for 12 year olds.

What's 1977 minus 1965?

Math isn't hard. Maybe you should read up on it.

If anything, it makes that scene more important, because everything Palpatine told Anakin was the truth.

Star Wars was ABSOLUTELY aimed at the 12 yr old market back in 1977.

People from later generations simply don't understand... it was around the the late 80's or early 90's (the time the Power Rangers came out) that "kid stuff" changed.

Go back and watch Johnny Quest, Space Ghost, the Herculoids, etc. These were Saturday morning cartoons, for kids (boys). In every episode, the good guys kill the bad guys. And in ways and numbers that would make Rambo proud.

"Kid Stuff" back then was a clear Good vs Bad storyline, where the Good Guys were obviously good and obviously right, and the Bad Guys deserved to get what was coming to them. It wasn't about shades of gray, or hesitance to act, or even the values of teamwork (a big Power Rangers selling point).

True. I remember watching that thinking it just kept going...and going...and going.

They even parodied that in Spaceballs...”We brake for nobody”.

Look at the photos from the lines in 1977, yes there are some kids, but the majority of the audience were adults. Don't kid yourself.

I'm not kidding myself or anyone else.

The secret of Star Wars was that it's a "kid's movie"-unashamedly Good vs Evil, no shades of gray, no qualifiers- but presented in a way adults could appreciate.

Yes, it had great special effects, etc. But it was also a kickback to "old time" movies, where the choice was obvious and simple, and it came in an era where everything was complicated and jaded - the 70's, post-Watergate, post-OPEC crisis, post-Vietnam. Go watch movies from then, and a whole lot of things were cynical, counterculture, ultimately hopeless. People wanted, needed something big and spectacular, and openly "childlike"... where it wasn't complicated or confusing.

Star Wars was that. Luke, the Jedi, they were good and wholesome, and the Empire was bad. And Good won

thats a horrible set of criteria to base whether a movie is a kids movie or not. I mean is Die Hard a kids movie? it is good vs evil. Is Terminator a kids movie? it is good vs evil. What about Mad Max> it is good vs evil.

On the topic of the OP:
1.The obvious, Duel of the Fates. But I'll throw in the space battle with the Naboo N-1 Starfighters, simply because I think it's a cool-arse ship.
2. Hmm...exposed midriff Padme and the gang fighting in the coliseum?
3. I guess the Opera scene.
4. The Millennium Falcon coming out of the sun as Han returns to save the day.
5. Besides the Vader/Luke duel on Bespin, I always liked Luke in the Speeder vs. the AT-ATs.
6. After the throne room duel/scenes, the Falcon escaping the exploding Death Star II.
7. Rey finding Luke and extending Anakin/his old lightsaber out to him...so much potential wasted.
8. Ugh! Not a lot to like in this one. Though, stupid and universe shifting...the lightspeed-as-a-weapon scene was visually awesome.
9. Don't know...haven't seen it and don't plan to.

Rogue One: Jyn and Cassian's scene before being annihilated. Looking into each other's eyes thinking of what might have been. Knowing they both finally accomplished something they can be proud of as Rebels, before embracing as death approaches like an old friend to great them.

Haven't seen Solo.
