I’m not a fan of The Walking Dead but the first episode is phenomenal

For me

Lost
Americans
Breaking Bad
The Leftovers

Not the best pilot ever, but my favorite opening scene from a pilot is Game of Thrones. I remember knowing nothing about the show and giving it a shot, and when it was completely black with that eerie music and the gate opened, I got chills. .

Credit to the production of Lost and TWD, after watching both pilots I knew I would never enjoy either show and didn't need to watch further to see if it developed.

The Last Man on Earth is the best comedy pilot I've ever seen.

For drama there are a lot of contenders, but I'd probably say my favorite was either Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire. Doesn't get much better than Scorsese.

Has a show ever started so strong and with so much promise only to have the bottom fall out so quickly? That was such a disappointing show.

Yeah, BB is up there for me. The Shield, Sopranos, and Twin Peaks (largely for the wtf impact of it when it first aired on regular tv).

LOST’s Pilot will never be topped. It’s objectively the greatest pilot episode of all time. Until Game of Thrones, it was by far the most expensive television episode ever shot, and tons of heads rolled at ABC for approving of such a risky and expensive project before it ever hit the airwaves. It changed television forever.

Meh.

Yeah, Lost pilot was great and expensive but it didn't change television forever and it was not the first time a very expensive pilot was made and was successful.

In the late 1970s, The Incredible Hulk was the most expensive tv show in production. It was very early use of special effects, they destroyed stuff every episode, and used a lot of special guest appearances by known actors and actresses of the time, along with their regular cast. The 2 hour, 2 part pilot was great and probably the best two hours of the shows 6 years. It remained a very expensive production throughout and eventually ended due to high costs though it was still quite popular.

The pilot for the original Hawaii Five O was a two hour movie. It had a different intro and different actor playing Danno.

That’s not how you use “objectively”.

And to say it changed tv forever is a bit hyperbolic. Massive tv budgets were coming whether Lost was around or not.

Friends had a really good pilot, even though the further away I get from the show, the more I dislike it.

The Cosby Show pilot was probably the best I remember.

Yeah, that’s not why it ended. It ended because the creators went to the network and told them during season 3 they needed an end date
