Never realized this but it makes sense plot wise I guess.

The "map" on Enola's back is Chinese (and one Japanese) character that translates to Everest's latitude and longitude coordinates...kind of. It actually doesn't say which quadrant it's in.

LINK

Btw, the city Costner dives to is Denver. Makes sense, its a mountain town, but just a few days later they've sailed and air glided to fricking Nepal and Everest??

No shite. It is the highest point on Earth and therefore the last remaining land.

Wasn't there a plaque on the ground at the end of the movie indicating that it was Everest? Like a plaque commemorating one of the first people to climb it?

I don't know, Maybe I'm wrong and not remembering it right. It's been a long time.

EDIT: Looked it up. Apparently that was an alternate ending.

Is Waterworld one of those movies that became more appreciated as the years have gone by or does everyone still think it's garbage?

Waterworld was always awesome., people just shite on it because it bombed so bad an had bad press. If I remmeber, it was like around a $200 million movie back in 95 and all of the stories talked about how much trouble the production had. But it's a great rewatchable cable movie.

It was mad max on water.

It's fun if you completely turn off your brain but if you start thinking about it for more than 2 minutes the movie's logic completely collapses on itself.

I'm more concerned with the relatively quick evolutionary emergence of giant oceanic super eels.

I still like it, though. I'm a sucker for futuristic dystopias.

I also question how anyone is even surviving at 20,000+ feet above (today's) sea level, especially with virtually no plant life left on earth to give off oxygen.

Plus why is the weather always sunny and mild? They're trekking across the entire globe it seems and nothing changes.

Plus, apparently paper is the most valuable thing on earth but cigarettes and whisky has survived for hundreds, if not thousands of years?

Nitpicking is not good for this movie but it's still fun.

Don't think the oxygen is the issue. As it is I'm pretty sure ocean plankton create a majority of the world's oxygen. There not being nearly enough water in the ice caps for the type of coverage on the other hand is an issue. The whole smoking thing is just absurd though. It made sense for that to be the villains though with the social war against smoking that was really getting going at the time.

It's a fun movie with some cool action and all, but it's still dumb as hell.

Which would be over 5 miles below sea level if Everest is the only dry land.

Most (as much as 85%) of oxygen generation is from the oceans today.

And even if all photosynthesis stopped, we could go for centuries before suffocation even begins to be an issue.

FWIW I feel like the movie takes place around 200 years after collapse of civilization

Thinking back, literally everyone should have been roasting in the sun or had trouble breathing in the thin atmosphere, or even worse freezing. It wasnt like waterworld existed thousands of years after a "flood event".
