I can't stand Rawls.

at least with Bubbles he's got his issues but he shows signs he wants to get better

Spoiler:

Rawls is just a yes man who navigates up the chAIN of command. A squeaky wheel.

I just finished watching it myself....late dog to the game. Enjoyed the hell out of it, but folks are correct, here....Season 5 is weak. Still very watchable, but the weakest link in a fine series.

If you haven't done so already, take in Bosch after The Wire. Very similar and very entertaining as well.

One of my favorite shows

Don’t hate on Bubbles, he is more of a “regular guy”(struggles with serious problems but is kindhearted) than anyone else in the show.

I love S2, and I would think most people on this board would love a more Baw-like group of characters.

I appreciated S5 because I was studying Journalism and that is heavily influenced in that season. My professor told me to focus on that aspect of the season so I had appreciation for that.
Also, you have to set up where the future was going with the youngsters. Put some respect on Michael’s name.

Oz gets a bad rep for the “prison sex” stuff but that show is high quality too with good storylines.....still waiting for this series to get a reboot.

Don't bother after 4.

This is the dumbest prevalent take in all of TV.

Sure the new storyline in S5 is lacking, but the rest of the overall show arc is as strong as ever and it fricking concludes.

The final episode still rocks.

Gave up during season 3. I'll never understand why this show gets so much hype

I'm sure many have heard so much hype it turns them off of the show, that's natural but this...

It's a standard cop show, imo.

is objectively false in fact the exact opposite.

While I agree that S5 is by far the weakest of the series, it’s still good television. Just a couple of the plot points get a little ridiculous. But it still manages to carry forward plots for a ton of the characters and like someone said it absolutely nails the finale. The finale along makes S5 worth it IMO. But besides the finale, it’s still enjoyable to watch for most of the characters.

the biggest problem with S5 is the broader criticism Simon was trying to make isn't executed well. Each season was a critique of an institution : Law Enforcement/The Economy/Politics/Education/The Media and the effect those institutions have on people and that its difficult to change institutions because people don't really change. In S5 the subtle point is the paper misses all the major stories but it just wasn't executed as well as the others.

I can buy that.

Spoilers..

My biggest gripe with S5 was the ridiculous bullshite McNulty and Lester pull with the "serial killer." But then I tried to just view it as them literally doing whatever it takes to keep the wire going, and was okay with it.

of course, one of the great things about the Wire is it's realistic portrayal of things and that sub plot and the reporter covering it stretch credibility.
