All he's saying is that it is more acceptable or common in 2016 to have a major movie with a strong female lead than it was 30 years ago. I fail to see how that is pandering to SJWs

First of all, that is not what he's saying.

Second how would you describe Leia in the original Star Wars 40 years ago?

I'm not opposed to Rey and Finn at all. Daisy Ridley did a fantastic job as Rey in Episode 7.

I wouldn't say what Disney is trying to do is pandering, but I do believe there is a concentrated effort towards as diverse a cast as possible both in terms of race as well as sexual orientation and gender/sex.

Im not necessarily opposed to this, but I definitely see the casting designed around checking off certain boxes with regards to gender and race.

He said there is nothing wrong with a strong female lead character. I didn't see anything about pandering so SJWs

I thought Daisy Ridley was goo in her role, but my nitpick with her is that it is hard for me to take her seriously as being bad arse at hand to hand combat when she is 5'7 and 140 lbs dripping wet. And before someone brings up that she is strong with the Force, that doesn't explain her ability to whip Platt's men.

I'd say having lived with them all her life, she has had to fight them all of her life or else she would have died long before. I'm just going with she's feisty as hell.

Yeah, you have to take a real-world context with this. It's a rough, ugly environment.
Rey is a good looking chick, and likely would have been targeted for something a lot more nasty than just stealing a droid from her, so she'll fight accordingly. If you're gonna come at her, she's going to be desperate.

She's not dumb, and probably figured out early on that she isn't going to win on strength, so she figured out how to use weapons to balance things out.

I've read 5 star wars books, watched all of the films, watched all of Clone Wars, watched all of Rebels so far, read Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 1 and Star Wars Vol. 1 and I have no idea who they are. Oh well, I guess i need to bow down to your greatness or go jerk it to Bilbo again.

while keeping up with the current social themes of 2016 america

That implies a deliberate choice.

Reading comprehension FTMFW.

Not really or not actually? Are you saying if her performance had been nominated for an academy award it would have been as best supporting actress and not best actress? It at least debatable it would have been best actress. And really the point is that 40 years ago a strong female lead (or leadish) was no big deal, and quite frankly, her character was awesome.

So this idea that this non-existent social barrier needs to be contested through deliberate casing choices, is absurd.

New movies should incorporate Vuzan Vong. The EU has tons of great material

I didn't read much post ROTJ material, but I always thought the Yuuzhan Vong felt out of place in Star Wars. Could've just put the ancient sith species in their place and it would've been better.

Bruce Lee was only 5'7 and 128 pounds and he was a brutal force.
