I think it was a mediocre adaptation of a great comic. Strangely enough, the greatest flaw is that he is too faithful to the source material. I don’t think the director actually completely understands it, and he certainly doesn’t understand the difference in the mediums which dictate certain thematic changes.

Really, what I liked best about the movie is that it reminded me of the book. I’d agree with whoever said just go read the comic instead.

Watched the director's cut last night. It definitely makes for a smoother movie, much less choppy.

I'd recommend that everyone read the book, just because it's a great book. But I'd recommend the movie as well, even without reading the book.

Questions for those who think that it was horrible:

1) Did you read the graphic novel?
2) What were you expecting?
3) Why did you think that it was horrible/bad/whatever?

no

2) What were you expecting?

something along the lines of this movie, but without the bad production/style/acting

also, in the end, this non-conventional attempt turned into a very generic story

3) Why did you think that it was horrible/bad/whatever?

i don't think the story was anything great, and the production values were just low. it was an attempt at super style and it just failed. the acting was so-so. the story was nothing special

the whole was far less than the sum of the parts in this one

No, it was the "Cock Me" chick from The Heartbreak Kid.

Generally, those who answer "No" to #1 don't have a solid response to #2.

This is one of those stories that you had to read the graphic novel in order to appreciate what the director was trying to do. After that, the criticism changes to what was left out and/or changed.

James Earl Haley(I believe) gave a great performance as Rorshach.

Also I thought the guy who played Dr. Manhattan was very good.

Night Owl was very meh though.

i didnt read the novel so i was kind of lost. but the people i know who read the novel said they loved it.

I think Jackie Earl Haley stole the show in this one. he was awesome.

Honestly, I liked the portrayal of Night Owl. It’s the key role of the story, how he’s now this out-of-shape, impotent (both figuratively and literally) has-been swapping stories at the old folks home. He’s a character who lives up to the assessment “your greatest failure is your greatest accomplishment.” It’s a tough role to play, and I think he nailed it.

He’s also perhaps the only character in the book who qualifies as a decent human being.

That is certainly a matter for debate.

So is this based on a series of comics or is this a novel? Sorry I hear both terms thrown around. I would read a book but I wouldn't try to catch up on a series of comics.

Edit: I'm not a comic book person so sorry is this sounds stupid...

Its a collection of 8 comics that are bound together into one novel. Its the only comic book I've ever read.

It's a Graphic Novel.

LINK

It was originally issued as a twelve book comic book series, and then later compiled into one graphic novel format. Just pick up the compiled version and you'll be happy.

I agree, he played the timid ex super hero pretty well. I thought it was a pretty good movie. The previews made it look as if it were going to be epic though. I'll have to buy the dvd and check out the director's cut. The novel was very good though.

Read it then watch the movie. As Baloo said, it was very enjoyable to see scenes directly from the comic come to life.

I haven't seen the director's cut but that's what should have been released cause there were several key points from the comic left out of the movie.

A lot of the choppiness people speak of is because of poor or non-existant transitions from book to book of the comic.

All of that said, I still enjoyed the theatrical version of the movie and the long run time went by pretty quickly.
