What happens after that one month?

Then it’s theaters only until they go to the streaming and pay services.

I love the theatrical experience. No matter how big TVs get, it'll never replace going to the movies for me.

I used to think that way too but I can only think of a couple times where the strangers around me added something positive to the experience. I can think of many where it was negative.

They will never again match the kind of revenue they were experiencing before the pandemic.

This is going to happen in a lot of industries.

People are creatures of habit. Many business models were reliant on people just doing things the way they always had been.

The pandemic forced people to do things differently and got them over the change hump. Things are not going to go back to 100% the way they were before because habits were broken.

Once Regal and AMC etc. go out of business the studios will buy the real estate and open up their own theaters

Looks like I don’t have to buy tickets to Dune, Sherlock Holmes 3, or Suicide Squad 2.

Still not worth the price to see Space Jam 2.

I've rarely had any problems with other people in the theater. However, I do try and avoid the Friday/Saturday night showings on opening weekends for major movies

hmmm...ive now confused myself.

I think i might have been saying that pirating is a problem for a 20 dollar at home Mulan release but probably less so for the Mandalorian or a Netflix movie.

These will be so widely available to subscribers.

Seems like they would do the 31 day exclusive run in theaters first and then add to HBO Max, but whatever.

I’m not going to like this new trend of skipping theaters, for two major reasons:

1. There isn’t a middle class living room in this country that can match the movie watching experience of a halfway decent movie theater auditorium.

2. I’m not staying up to midnight/3am on a Thursday night/Friday morning to stream a blockbuster. I enjoyed getting off work on a Thursday afternoon, grabbing a quick bite to eat and settling in for a movie. I could tell my coworkers about it (spoiler free) and if I was hyped up about it, could go catch it again that night or over the weekend. That’s out the window.

There also isn't a middle class living room in this country that costs additional money to sit in and watch a movie. A family of four can end up spending over $80 on tickets and concessions. They also can't pause the movie when six-year-old Timothy needs to get up to use the restroom.

With the cost of living increasing by the year, spending that kind of money on the movie theater experience has become less and less appealing to me.

The problem with theaters isn't the theaters themselves or even the prices, which is whatever.

It is the other people in the movie theater. There is now almost always going to be trash in every theater you go to, talking, taking phone calls, on their distracting phones texting, etc. All around awful experience that makes going not worth it.

Someone's bound to come up with an alternative to the old theater model. Not sure what it would be, but people will still want to see movies in a theater type setting.

I think a small room with 6-10 theater-style recliners and a large projection screen would be a nice alternative. Sell the viewing to a group or even one person for a set minimum price. Then you're not dealing with other people. If you split it between 5-8 people then it wouldn't be much per person, but the "theater" gets the same price every time. And they could run the movie at any time.

Or keep it small with 5 seats and if a couple wants to go to a movie by themselves they buy all 5 seats. No talking strangers to deal with.

I am always torn between enjoying going to a theatre a few times a year, and risking the chance i'll encounter one of the cringiest things on the planet, and that's clapping at theatres.

I agree with this film guy on twitter

quote:

Nothing will replace the "theater experience" but the problem is, so many theaters spent decades banking on them being the ONLY place to see movies for a while. They cared less about ensuring an unforgettable experience and will need to find that focus again.

quote:

Whether it's better seating, better cleaning procedures, enforcing no phone policies, or just fricking calibrating their screens/projectors like they should be doing regularly, they need to remind audiences of the things they can't get at home.

quote:

And that doesn't get into the cost aspect. Lot of us don't realize how prohibitive theaters can be. I created a WHOLE arse CHARITY based on giving kids in need the chance to go. EVERY event there were multiple kids in attendance who'd never had the chance to go.
