USA Today Review: SNL is Funnier Without the Politics

Review: Without a presidential election, 'SNL' is funnier and lighter than it's been in years
quote:
If it's an election year, it's usually a good year for "SNL."
But Season 47 of the comedy institution, which has had an excellent first six episodes, proves that a presidential election might hurt the show creatively more than it helps. Unburdened by the demands of commenting on every political gaffe and presidential debate, and eschewing high-profile celebrity cameos as public figures (sorry, Jim Carrey), "SNL" this season so far has been unexpectedly hilarious, delightful and thrilling. Its cast, though still large and unwieldy (with 15 regulars and six featured players), has rarely been so well deployed.
quote:
New featured player James Austin Johnson is a clear standout, taking on Joe Biden and Donald Trump impressions (but not in the same episode) that are better than the ringers (Carrey and Alec Baldwin) whom producer Lorne Michaels has brought in for the past few years. Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang continue to steal the spotlight in every one of their sketches and Fineman's celebrity impressions, from Jennifer Coolidge to Miley Cyrus, are startlingly accurate.

That seems to be the only improvement. The rest is garbage.

Weren't there threads recently talking about how they can't quit talking about Trump? If I am not mistaken, that clearly implies "politics."

Every cold open is still political. And just like the last several years, I fast forward right through it.
The Please Don't Destroy sketches are typically the highlight of the show.
The new girl castmember that did a character on weekend update last weekend was funny.
I don't think Chris Redd is very funny. Bowen Yang is pretty awful. Ego Nwodem is good.
I don't think Mellissa Vallosenor gets enough screentime.
Most of the guys on the show are unremarkable. I like Kyle Mooney though.
I tend to like the weirdos more.

Ego Nwodem is good.
And the less they rely on "surprise" celebrity guests, the better the show.

Definitely the best new cast in recent years. And Please Don't Destroy is a massive breath of fresh air.
They even took a satirical jab at cancel culture with the Weekend Update bit of the new cast member spinning Colin's words into mock headlines.

Almost every word in that article is false.

She's the female Frank Caliendo.

That was the bit I was referencing. That girl has potential. I just don't remember her name.

I do look forward to the cold open, pre-made skits/videos, and Weekend Updates. Rest is hit or miss.
The Squid Game video with Davidson and Malik is an all time classic for me.

Are the Please Don’t Destroy guys not actual cast members but get paid as freelancers or something?

I think they are considered "featured players" or something, but definitely not full time, regular cast members. Would imagine they get paid quite a bit less too.

They're writers.

quote:The part that annoys me the most is Weekend Update. It's by far the most reliably funny aspect of the show. And Che alone might be the best cast member. But it's just so relentlessly lame out of the gate each week with Trump type of stuff - he's been gone for 10 months!
That seems to be the only improvement. The rest is garbage.
Indisputably, the greatest running gag on the show is Che and Jost swapping jokes.

SNL has made fun of presidents and political figures since it's inception. Every single.sitting president, at the time, has been made fun of. It's only been criticized now because they made fun of Trump and him and his snowflake followers can't take a joke and get all offended over it. As if he's the first president that's been made fun of.
