The US should have played Wolf Warrior 2 in wide release.

Hollywood has conditioned people to only watch franchise movies. Non franchise movies don't get a lot of hype. They've gotten lazy and started putting out crappy movies thinking people would see it based on name alone.

I've seen Wolf Warrior 1. It was kinda boring. Not much interest in part 2 though it is amazing how much money its made. I can't see American audiences wanting to see it.

I was being sarcastic.

Never saw the first, but read the synopsis and reviews of the second, and its bad, as in worse than Michael Bay bad.

Yeah it just shows the difference between Chinese and American audiences. That's another problem with the box office, pandering to China.

I'd probably go see more movies if tickets were cheaper and I wasn't keenly aware of the fact that a movie in the theater is out for rental/purchase just 2-3 months later.

Why go pay (pre-snack prices) $20 to see CHIPs, $20 to see Alien Covenant, etc, etc when I can just wait a little bit, then rent them from redbox for $2 and watch from the comfort of my home.

Our Cinemark is having a Marvel week right now. I took my son on Saturday to see Guardians 2. Tickets were $5 each, Large cokes were $2 and large popcorn was $3. It was a good time for $17.

or maybe hollywood should start making original movies again, enough with the reboots and comic book films.

I saw exactly two movies this summer: Dunkirk and Baby Driver.

And prices have risen significantly over the past few years. Just 5-10 years ago a ticket was about $6. Now it's about $11. It's made me think twice about a movie. I used to go see a movie if I was on the fence about it. Now, unless I really want to see it, I'll just wait a few months and watch it on my home theater. Easy, cheap, convenient, comfortable.

Yeah, cinemark will do something like that. I know we have $5 Tuesdays for standard movies and vintage showings at cheaper prices.

Wait, you think this is because Hollywood is political?

Wait, you think Hollywood alienating half of the country will have no effect?

To show you what kind of year we're having, the frontrunners for Best Picture right now (on some sites) are Wonder Woman, Logan, Planet of the Apes, and Get Out.

I'm sure we'll get our usual artsy fartsy movies towards the end of the year but, for now, it's slim pickin's.

They also are fighting a society that wants to spend more and more time at home. Dinner and a movie has turned into Blue Apron + NetFlix and Chill.

Like every other industry that has fought technology and consumer demand, they're not going to see the end coming until it's too late. Amazon has 2 of the more critically acclaimed movies the last few years in Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick. NetFlix has not had good results with movies yet, but they're throwing down a lot of money on original content. $7 billion next year alone. Something will stick eventually. They just bought the comic book writer that came up with the main story arcs for successful Marvel movies the Avengers, Logan and Captain America Civil War. Who's to say NetFlix doesn't get the next Guardians of the Galaxy success story out of a deal like that?

Over time people will start watching more new movies at home, a place the movie industry is making it as difficult and expensive as possible to buy the products they make. They're even fighting with Apple for wanting to sell 4k versions of digital movies for $20.

For one, they need to spread out the big movies. One after another each week in the spring is too much.

The selection this year has ok. Nothing overly special though.

US Box Office headed the same way as the US Mall - around the bowl and down the hole

Exactly
I boycott and bootleg via kodi specifically to avoid funding liberal actors and actresses.

Outside of a couple, the movies this summer have generally just stunk.

I disagree. This has been one of the best summers for movies in a while IMO.

Dunkirk, Baby Driver, The Big Sick, War for the Planet of the Apes, The Lost City of Z, Alien: Covenant, Girls Trip, Logan Lucky, Wonder Woman, Spiderman: Homecoming

We've been moving toward that for over a decade.

There used to be movies that made shite-ton of money and then movies that were about film-mkaing, storytelling and yes, maybe a little artsy-fartsy...but they were mostly about story-telling.

It's been trending this way for so long. Kids go to the movies, older people don't - they have the big screen at home. You only really go if you have kids under 10.

It's comic-con as the target audience and 8 year olds who beg Mom to take her to see Toy Story 3, Zootopia and Finding Nemo.

The entire film industry target audience is teenagers and Parents with little kids. That's where we are at.

I think that this is the ongoing result of films becoming more available for cheaper in other areas. This has little to nothing to do with Hollywood being political.
