Name some actors who are consistently compelling to watch and would be worth checking out their career catalog.

I'll start with Michael Shannon. Guy is intense.

Take Shelter, Iceman, Midnight Special, 99 Homes all interesting movies with great performances by him.

Peter Capaldi - Almost solely tv work, but he's just great. He's brilliant as Malcolm Tucker in 'The Thick of It' and its movie adaptationIn The Loop. He's also absolutely amazing in Torchwood's "Children of Earth" storyline (the show is worth watching because of his performance).

Eduardo Verástegui - Mexican actor. Only a few of his films have made it over here. Check out Bella.

Cheating a bit, but...

Peter O'Toole - Nominated eight fricking times for Best Actor and never won it. fricking bullshite.

Don't worry. He will get the notice once Dunkirk is released.

He hasn't been in too many movies that showcase his ability much but :

Oscar Isaac

His performance in Ex Machina and Inside Lewellen are pretty awesome.

Saw Midnight Special last night. There were some damn good actors in that movie. Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard, Joel Edgerton.

And Capaldi is killing it on Doctor Who. He's just been let down by terrible, awful scripts. He always struck me as being someone who would be a good Star Wars bad guy.

I really like Luis Guzman. He was on quite a roll for a while. Seemed like he was in every good movie in the late 90s-early 00s.

How about Joel Edgerton. He doesn't necessarily have the personality/looks to be the hero of too many films, but he gives a knockout performance every time on screen

Tom Hardy. Easily. Michael Shannon is a great suggestion by the OP as well.

If only I could understand what hell he was saying. And my vote is Jon Bernthal. He is a scene stealer.

If he's still underrated then of course, but I don't think he still fits that category. Dude is widely regarded as the best younger actor around
