with all the talk of season 4 being shite, while only 2 episodes in, i'm kinda curious when people knew season 2 shite.

i didn't think it was that bad until the Colin Farrell chase scene in the woods. i believe that was the final episode.

After a couple episodes it was easy to see it wasn’t gonna be on the same level as season 1

So just stopped at that point and was waiting to watch all the episodes at once

it wasn't shite. it wasn't as good as S1 because HBO gave Pizzolatto an insane deadline but it's a perfectly fine season of television.

I thought it had way too many characters and storylines, but I felt it got better as it went on. I don't hate it like many others do.

I just did a rewatch before S4 came out.

It’s not as bad as we thought IMO. But it wasn’t anywhere near the level of S1. It’s just very jarring as it got away from the feel of TD in S1 (and S3 went back to that vibe). It didn’t have the mystical feeling to it.

When they casually show us that Velcoro’s kid is a chubby ginger

Nah, it was probably by episode 2 when you realize that they were having episodes close out with Lera Lynn singing sad dive bar songs.

The season just tried to balance way too many characters and in too close of proximity to season 1 that it all felt like watching a caricature of what people thought of True Detective to be.

About halfway through I realized I didn't have a clue what was going on. By the end, I still didn't really understand what was going on and just felt dumb.

Is that the consensus? Haven’t started watching yet.

Hard to remember exactly, but after a few episodes it was obvious it was no where near the quality of the first season.

Season 2 is actually pretty decent. Enjoyed it more than Season 3.

I just watched TD S2 all the way through two weeks ago and thought it was better than S3. When it came out in '15, I gave up after 3 episodes and held the same opinion as you. After watching it in it's entirety I changed my opinion.

Small Possible Spoiler (but is somewhat apparent after the first 2 episodes if you're not an idiot like me)....

I missed the "father abandonment" theme on the first watch (although I only watched 3 episodes), and it gave me the impression that it was just a bunch of disjointed stories. This really helps tie everything together.

I liked. I did not compare it to season 1. It was pretty good as was season 3

Same here. I did multiple re-watches and still couldn't figure out wtf was going on. I did like the giant bowl with all the viagra at the sex party.

S4 is the polar opposite of S1 for me in that the writing and dialogue is pretty meh but the mystery so far has been very interesting and it being 6 episodes it feels like it will be a pretty tight, lean storyline.

both S1 & S4 have incredible settings.
