Could have also done something with maybe a local Ennis PD dominated and staffed by indigenous people with an outside State Trooper coming in to oversee the investigation.
That works, too.
Or the reverse. Local/white PD dealing with a native trooper who isn't part of the local bullshite/culture.

Also everyone that says they're done with the show can kick rocks. I am a glutton for punishment and never quit on a crappy show. Bring on episodes five and six. I am in the night country now.
I think everyone who's still hanging in on this thread will be hanging in on the next two episodes

Did anyone else speculate on what the callback to S1 that the write claims is in the season finale and made him roll his eyes and laugh?

Can someone please explain the Forbes critic bashing the last two episodes before they are released?
He said in the article that he's seen the last 2 episodes already and was basing his review on that

I think it's important that we do indeed speculate.

I called mine... either
Childress is there, since Tuttles are tied to the station
or
There is a portal in the caves that takes them to Louisiana

The fifth episode of “True Detective: Night Country” will be available to stream early on Max beginning Feb. 9 at 9 pm ET n order to avoid the Sunday night stream-roller that is the Super Bowl.
I’ll get right on that !!!
My Friday night just booked up !

Lol no I just want there to be some wild speculation on this thread about what the eyeroll season one tie-in in 4.6 will be. I hope it's something like a last minute unanswered question, then the police captain or whatever he is says "we've got a guy coming in from the Louisiana State Police to assist". Everyone looks up at the captain and he says "everyone, meet Rust Cohle". Fade to black bc Matthew McConaughey would never lower himself to actually cameo in this.

constant harping on “no God” is redundant as hell. We get it, she doesn’t believe in god, does she have to remind us of that every 30 seconds?
thats pretty in line with season 1 and Rust, he had many monologues basically denouncing all religion

I can't speak for others but I really wanted to give it a shot based solely on the heritage in the title, plus the cast looked good and the setting is intriguing. It was also fun to poke at the chuds claiming it was WOKE due to the leads. Two episodes in and I was still up for defending it, then really teetered following the third. After last night? I'm going to enjoy hate-watching this show for the last two episodes and ripping it to shreds.
I am in the same camp, was very hopeful even after the third episode but it doesnt seem to be going really anywhere and is incredibly convoluted. hopefully the next 2 episodes redeem the shitty convoluted plot but im not optimistic anymore

Difference from season 1 is that we were told by present day Marty that everyone called rust Taxman and thought he was weird as shite. The philosophy of pessimism he espouses thereafter is 1. To shade in the character based on that description and 2. In reaction to Marty’s frustration with Rust’s disdain for his surroundings/sense of superiority to the people around him. It serves a critical point, both in ostracizing Rust from the community and setting of Louisiana as well as giving him a defined starting point to what becomes his arc of belief in the end.
The shallow Nietzschean grumblings in season 4 are just that: they don’t really serve a purpose other than to remind us that neither of the main characters are happy. In fact, they tend to end up agreeing on the topic of God either not being real or not caring so there’s not even that much friction. It’s just kind of pointless filler

Well put, i agree with all that, esp in the sense that it was part of Rust's character arc. It doesnt seem like any of the characters are any kind of arc whatsoever in S4

I believe that Danvers ordered him to have the vet come look because the medical examiner would take too long and Danvers was updated on his assessment.

Oh I am fully watching the show and can't make sense of it.
We just hit 2/3 and they added ANOTHER flashback mystery to the mix (Navarro seeing things during their little incident with the "suicide" guy)

I had to wait til last night to watch and ....yikes. However I am grateful for the nonstop laughs I've gotten from this thread and reddit after the episode since those have been infinitely more entertaining than the actual episode.
I don't have any other critiques that haven't been hit on thoroughly already. I guess my biggest question is why whoever the bigdawg at HBO is that made the executive decision to slap "True Detective" onto this would want to do so as it relates to their professional legacy? In the extreme short term I obviously get it....they know that the show they had was kind of a stinker and would fall flat so they put TD on front of it and boom, you've got millions more eyeballs than you would otherwise which looks great for the bottom line. BUT...now you've essentially tarnished the entire name of the franchise forever. You're going to be known as the guy that tanked a goldmine of a series. From now on forever people are going to give True Detective the same treatment as Indiana Jones, GOT, Dexter, etc. Whenever people start to talk about how insanely awesome of a franchise it is it'll instantly be met with "yeah, but..." as we then have to explain away what happened at the tail end.
Do you think whoever this person is just simply doesn't give a shite about that? Or are comfortable knowing that the general public doesn't know who they are? I don't have a million dollar high stress gig like that but even still, I would absolutely hate knowing that I made the decision at my job that completely tanked something that was very valuable and drove it into the ground of public perception, even it meant an extremely short term blip of increased revenue.

The media/media content industries are pretty incestuous. If you're a content creator and you want access, you have to hold criticisms or do it with kids' gloves. This gives these producers, directors, writers, etc. false confidence in their output.
They want to be subversive or "creative" and re-imagine shows or entire genres, and the fart sniffing reinforcement in their bubble makes them believe it's great. Then when people outside that bubble are like "wut da frick?" and criticize the content, they just create some monster persona (online dude bros or whatever is the go to now) to ad hom those people into irrelevancy. Then the incestuous content creators join in to amplify this messaging.
The thing is, it just doesn't work today. It really only works within their bubble, and these days we get to see the bubble in action, and comment/mock it in real time. They get really upset that their Gatekeeper status is gone.
