True Detective is the most miniature of all because it focuses on the different reactions of two men to a basic metaphysical problem--Marty, who is largely in denial, and Rust, who sees things for what they are.

i'm not completely denying this, but this analysis is VERY Rust-centric/dominated

What's unique about this show is it is a novel written as a TV show or vice versa....it's compact and has a beginning and an end. It was written by a novelist, conceived in my view as a novel...basically I think this is cutting edge in that the writer has breached the wall between the written word and film IMV.

And there's a full length movie of time to wrap up the mystery for those worried about that non-issue.

Character development does not mean "characters developing" or changing as your question suggests. It refers to the process by which the writer reveals the character, his traits, his tendencies, how he responds to stimuli, the way he thinks and processes, the way he interacts, his motivations, etc. it allows the reader/viewer to make a determination as to what kind of person the character is.

but rust and marty are so flat that we did this at least 4 episodes ago (really in episode one)

We'd both probably agree though, that unlike LOST, there's no intent for the viewers to trace down 15th centry illuminated manuscripts, read all the novels mentioned, educate ourselves on quantum theory, read an online diary (all of which then turn out to have been pointless endavours, as nothing really meant anything, even though the show's writers told people it was important), which is how LOST handled symbolism and mystery.

i agree

but i hate Lost. fricking hate it

i am far from hating TD

Well, Rust is the main hero of the show.

And we just saw Rust and Marty "develop" in the last episode--Rust is clearly losing his already-tenuous grip in the face of new evidence about the killings, and Marty is coming closer to seeing things Rust's way.

Nah, I don't believe that. I think he was serious when he threw the folder down and told the two detectives "This all you got? Well, shite, I already knew that." I think that he agreed upon meeting with them in obvious hopes he could get more info on the case.

Whatever he sees his daughter doing in the video in the preview will be the tipping point.

I think he was referring to Rust and the evidence he was discovering in 2002.

i quit lost in season 4 and then caught up during teh final season just so i could shite on it in real time

i agree with everyone bringing up Lost as being the game changer in terms of mystery on tv

it's also, by far, the biggest example of that whole "shifting expectations" meme i've posted about. if you could have told the fans the resolution of the series/mysteries AFTER season 1, it would not have made it to season 2

Yeah I was talking about 2002--the darkness is infecting him (as witnessed in his suggestion that the infanticide kill herself).

Truthfully, I don't think I did much texting until Hurricane Katrina.

I remember texting a lot after Katrina so that means everyone else had been doing it for 3-5 years , as it seems I'm always behind when it comes to advanced technology ......

for the record, mcnutty doesn't change at all. he's the same guy each season. he's the unwavering moral compass

He definitely tried to change, and did several times (only to revert back to his old ways). But we'll save that for another day as to avoid Wire spoilers.

that's one reason i want to pin down what people expect now. the expectations of the show have decreased over the past 7 episodes, but people aren't willing to acknowledge it. i do and i'm the villain

it's not about me being "right" as much as it is ending the shifting of the goal posts. it seems that i'm being stubborn b/c i haven't wavered, while everyone else is being more flexible by changing expectations

Nah. What do YOU expect of the show? Because to me (and everyone else), it appears that whatever your expectations are, they are impossible for the show to reach. So you're going into the show (since about episode two) completely biased to dislike it and be disappointed in it.

And expectations haven't changed at all for me. This show is still delivering week after week, just in different ways. Maybe others aren't on that same page, but I've been pleasantly surprised by this show every week, and that has nothing to do with my expectations changing or me moving goal posts. This show is really good. It's not the GOAT or anything like that, but nobody can say that at this point...it's not even through the first (short) season yet.

Yeah, wrapping up Reggie Ledoux mind of pushed Rust back towards a normal life. Reopening the case pushed him further down to what he was after his daughter was killed.

frick this world as he says.

Question.
I just got a private message about being on thin ice/ban for that spoiler I laid.
Is this a message from admin?
I mean sh!t over 12,000 post a 1 spoiler slip?

Not sure, but spoilers are crucial on a M/TV board, so that's prolly why.

I assume (by your posting this) that you aren't/weren't banned. (?)

Certainly not a secret. But you sure seem to be triumphantly blowing your horn more louldly in this thread than other shows/movies.

What do YOU expect of the show?

at this point, i've already said what i think ep 7 will be

the final episode will be marty/rust teaming up to expose the cult, and it will fail...either through personal compromise (marty) or death (rust). hell they probably have some leverage over marty (i'd guess maggie) that leads to him crossing rust

so things stay the same and the cult lives on. we may not even ever see the man with the scars on his face

-i do not expect a resolution of the storyline/plot involving the cult

-i do expect rust to die

-i do expect marty to fail, likely due to a woman
