Read up on what current and former police and current in former FBI were allowed to get away with in Miami in the build-up to Bay of Pigs. Partners to and party to all sorts of violence and drug-deaing.
It's a common trope in hard-boiled & noir detective fiction that the system allows fringe operators on the side of the police to get away with breaking the law. From what I've read, the show writer falls into that category. You may not agree that it's the reality of the world we inhabit, but that doesn't matter, because in the realm of hard-boiled & noir detective fiction, which this show falls into, guys like Rusty are allowed to get away with the kind of stuff he does in the show.

I also see that as a possiblity. I'm not convinced, but I can't rule it out like I can Rust & Marty.

Did Rust break the fourth wall during the membrane speech?
Is he aware that he is a fictional character and the circle he was talking about is a DVD and we are the participants he was talking about that can analyze from afar?
To me, he's referring to the same thing Marty is referring to when he first talks about the Detective's Curse - both have to do with the fricked up timeline.
“You ever heard about something called the membrane theory, detectives. It’s like in this universe we process time linearly forward…but outside of our space-time, from what would be a fourth dimensional perspective, time wouldn’t exist and from that vantage, could we attain it…we’d see…(smashes can)…our space-time would look flattened like a single sculpture with matter in a superposition of every place it ever occupied, our sentience just cycling through our lives like carts on a track. See, everything outside our dimension…that’s eternity, eternity looking down upon us. Now, to us, it’s a sphere, but to them it’s a circle.”

Has anyone mentioned that there's a Joel Theriot Design in Breaux Bridge? Not really relevant, just thought it was funny.

How about we make this thread a place of quiet reflection?

Thanks Mizzou, no wonder I missed the spiral brand on Ledoux...you really have to look for it!

Anybody see the yellow crown Patton Oswalt tweeted about? Very interdasting. Not sure what it means, but everything means something in this show.

Sorry to jump into the thread but I just had a thought. The line from Hart to his father in law about how old men die and the world keeps spinning. It seemed eerily reminiscent of Ledoux with the line about how everything is just gonna happen again.
I'm really starting to think that Hart is a bad guy.

Yeah, the brand is evidently the MO and tate on Dora was for effect.

Technically, it's "M-brane" theory.

Pizzolatto disagrees.

I have only read half this thread. I don't know if it's been mentioned yet or not, but it is plausible Rust and Marty didn't actually have a fallout. They faked one to keep the yellow king group from focusing on both of them. Marty has been helping Rust the track down the killers the whole time.
I'm 90% certain of this. I believe the writers were inspired by Frailty. And MM has major pull on this project.
I just posted the comparison. I think they have been under DEEP cover for 10 years.
They've basically been building up that believable possibility this whole season.
Both are willing to do whatever it takes. Both are manipulative. Both lie and cover their tracks well together. Rust has years of experience truly dropping off the grid. WH owes Rust for covering up the murder and has also learned from him.
Both characters are very similar but are meeting in the middle coming from opposite extremes.
Want a hint if that? Look at WH's shirt the last two episodes.

I just really enjoy the show. I haven't re-watched the show 50 times and analyzed it like the Zapruder film. I just wanted to say it is a really good show. Thanks.

That's how the closed captions phased it. I changed that to "membrane" because I wasn't sure if the cc was correct.
