Why the
? Matthew McConaughey is an executive producer and the star of the show.
It's obvious there are themes in Frailty that are in play here.
Even the feel, music, lighting, and film hues are similar.
I'm not saying that WILL happen, but it makes the most sense to me when you factor in what we have seen and heard thus far.

Do y'all think this is only 1 season or will it be more?

"I knew True Detective wasn't something I could allow anyone else to develop," he says. "But by the time HBO expressed an interest, I still had no real experience." Despite this, Pizzolatto held his nerve and demanded complete creative control. Incredibly, he got it: he is True Detective's sole writer, executive producer and showrunner, an almost unheard-of deal in America, where writing teams and copious notes from producers and studio execs are the norm. "I'm still a little amazed they agreed," he says. "At that point, I'd only written two episodes and had a rough outline of where the show would go. HBO could have easily sidelined me. I was a complete unknown."
It helped that the newly in-demand McConaughey saw a copy of the script and lobbied to play the enigmatic Rust Cohle, a man plagued by hallucinations and his own pessimistic vision of an unjust world. "That was another way I got lucky," says Pizzolatto. "When Matthew expressed an interest, it was right before his renaissance. I'd seen Killer Joe and knew he was one of the few actors who could say Rust's dialogue and make you believe it. With a lesser actor, the part would have had to be drastically rewritten."

Meh, the preacher is tall, but he does not fit the scarred face description at all, nor does he match any "spaghetti montster" description.

This story is done this season.
Same approach as AHS.
Same approach as AHS.

You can quote all you want, but using the word DRASTICALLY implies it was rewritten.
And making them deep cover with them lying the entire interview while on the hunt = Frailty.

Yellow King is a code word/story concocted by corrupt police to perps to lay off of them in exchange for aiding in their corruption. Look at Charlie when he started talking yellow king shite. It was rehearsed. The spiral was drew by Marty's daughter, innocently enough, and this where Marty got the idea from.
Mart shot Reggie without him ever seeing him because he has dealt with Marty. Rust has been investigating Marty for years, IA. He got in close with Marty to see who else was pulling the yellow king Prost murders.
Also, Reggie was a ghost since parole because Marty and co allowed it to happen.
He thinks slutty women deserve what they get.
Also, the pharmacy killer yelled out yellow king to get a deal, just as Charlie did. Rust wasn't in on the game so he freaked out.
Marty used the pay phone by the levee. He's the only one to use a pay phone repeatedly in the show.
No cult. Tall Man was a benevolent preacher trying to help a lost girl.
The kids in the woods were anted there by Marty to sell his story.
Man with the scars? Another cop? Fake scars? The analogy of removing ones face came up several times.
It was Marty and some dirty cops.
You'll see.

That's it, you got it, just like Frailty.

"When I was writing I had to keep pushing into my own personal vision," says Pizzolatto, "and not worry about how a studio would see the show. Otherwise, you're just doing what everyone else is doing. I think the strangeness was what drew both HBO and the actors. I knew this was my one shot."

His own "personal vision" could have been influenced by anything, like a movie called Frailty.
It's obvious you've never seen the movie.
- exact same format and story telling vehicle
- cop interviewing mysterious character and using a nonlinear time line of flash backs to tell the story
- two main characters wrestling with morality while doing "their jobs"
- two main characters who form a deep bond through heinous acts and deception, essentially becoming the brothers they never had
- both characters wrestling with relationship issues
- both characters seek justice in different ways
- one character breaks bad while other is more steady
- both characters have to deceive everyone around them to survive
- deception is the key tool used in the interview
- both stories involve heavily ritualistic religious killings
- same type of music
- same lighting and editing approach etc
I could go on, but to say it's not inspired to a degree by Frailty would be hanging on to a mighty big string of creative coincidences.

You bring up a bunch of great points
If you look at Charlie's eyes as he is talking they are constantly going from left to right...he is reading a memorized script.
While I think Audrey has seen that sign somewhere I wouldn't say she made it up just yet. What if she saw it somewhere in a case file that Marty brought home to look at. Like the Rianne Olivier case file.
I've been toying with the idea that Ledoux got off his drug charges easy by becoming a CI and it's quite possible that Marty became his handler. If you recall, Ledoux was found guilty of 6 drug charges, but he only served 8 months. Marty contradicts the time served when he starts telling Rust after first trip to the Light of Way school that Ledoux served 2 years...why the discrepancy here?
Interesting
Someone earlier brought up that Marty checks the change in every pay phone he uses. To which I responded, wouldn't it be a hoot if Marty's print gets lifted from the payphone that the "attorney" for Guy Francis called from.
I'm still not sold on the cult angle. Trying to figure out how much of this angle could be Marty's creation.
I see this as the most realistic angle. Requires the fewest assumptions IMO.

Man you all analyze this show way too much. Just let it happen.

Your own creativity is quite impressive as well.
At this point if:
-they are deep cover
-or one of them is the killer
then the frailty comparison is pretty tight. And I'm sticking to it

I find that the process of deciphering the show has the highest utility for me.
I'd hate it if they released all episodes at once like House of Cards.
