Watching some old MASH reruns tonight and was having a hard time trying to figure out which character I liked better. Both have likeable attributes.
Who was the better sidekick to Hawkeye?

This is Woody vs. Coach...both fine...I liked both; same with MASH.
Trapper was less of a pussy...so probably him.

Trapper, for reasons already mentioned

Definitely Trapper. Much funnier. Less serious.

Trapper.
If BJ has the mustache, I don't watch the episode.

They turned BJ into a manic depressive at some point.

BJ sucks -- pun intended
BJ was always boring. First he was just boring, but then they figgered he needed some sort of personality and made him a practical joker, which made him even more irritating
Trapper's Southern drawl was the perfect partner to Hawkeye's Groucho
Trapper Forever

The re-run schedule seemed to be overly BJ and Potter in the 80's.
Getting an early MASH was like Eureka!
I guess of course because Trapper was only on for 3 years.
I don't think BJ sucked but he wasn't Trapper and let Alda take over the show. After Trapper left it was the Alda show...not MASH. Still good but not the same.

Trapper and not close.
I think Frank Burns vs Winchester is the better comparison.

MASH was much better in the early days. Once Alda became full of himself, the show suffered.
Did not realize the cast pretty much hated Gary Burghoff (Radar).

Trapper left without saying goodbye. What kind of name is BJ anyway? He'd never say. frick them both.

While I liked the Potter and Winchester characters, there was an obvious effort to "upgrade" each departing character with a more moral replacement. BJ, Potter, and Winchester were altar boys compared to Trapper, Blake, and Burns. The series intentionally lost its edge.
